College Town City Council Holds Meeting in City Park JOPLIN, MO - As reported by the Joplin Globe, Joplin, home to Missouri Southern State University, city council held a special City Council meeting in a downtown park. The council meeting became part of the Main Street Joplin's "Discover Downtown: Third Thursday" entertainment series. Mayor Gary Shaw said. "It even gives us as a council a chance to visit a little because at meetings, everything's business."
University Again Makes Voluntary Financial Contribution to CityREDLANDS, CA - The Redlands Daily Facts writes that the University of Redlands again made its annual voluntary donation of $50,000 to the city of Redlands. Despite facing its own budget challenges, the University made the donation to be used in five municipal areas, including the Public Arts Program, the "Lincoln in Film" symposium, student internships in city departments, the library, and the City General Fund. | |

Downtown Development Nonprofits as an Arm of Local Government ELMHURST, CA - According to the Chicago Tribune, some local governments in the Chicago area are beginning to audit leadership and funded projects of nonprofit groups promoting downtown districts with public funding. Many downtown development nonprofits plant flowers, host summer concerts, install holiday decorations and market the shopping destinations. Called into question are the procedures for voting rights. Some downtown nonprofits allow voting on issues weighted upon the amount of property owned in the district, sometimes providing a majority of the voting rights to few individuals. |

Kansas Considers a Policy to Allow Searches of Dorm Rooms LAWRENCE, KS - The Kansas City Star provides an editorial describing a policy consideration of the University of Kansas requiring housing supervisors who suspect alcohol or drug use in a student's dormitory room to get a key and enter a student's room, without permission and without a warrant from a judge. The policy will go into effect this fall if the Student Senate votes for it. KU administrators see it as a way to strengthen its already stiffer rules aimed at combating alcohol and drug use, following two alcohol-related deaths earlier this year.

Auburn Transit Revises Transit Service for Fall AUBURN, AL - The Auburn Plainsman reports that Auburn University is looking to improve the safety and security of students on campus by implementing a new nighttime bus system this fall. The new night transit will assist in getting students from downtown to the stop of their choice, be it on campus or off. Auburn's SGA helped design a system that now allows two different busing systems to co-exist and run efficiently. |

Gainesville, FL is researching "soft" bar closings. Bars stop serving alcohol at a certain time, then stays open without alcohol for a period of time. Gainesville PD is looking for communities that have these regulations, pros/cons, town gown issues, police, & business impacts etc.
