ITGA Announces Site for the 5th Annual Best Practices Conference for University/ City Relations

 The ITGA Executive Committee and the Conference Planning and Programming Committee are happy to announce the selection of Ames, Iowa as the host site for the 2010 Best Practices Conference for University/City Relations. Ames and Iowa State University partnered to win the host site from eight proposals submitted from across the US. The conference is scheduled for June 7-10, 2010 and promises to continue the educational value and fun-filled times as past conferences. Conference registration and Request for Papers will be advertised in the coming weeks.

Town Turns Abandoned Parking Meters into Street ArtMeter

AMHERST, VA - The Town of Amherst is working with area schools and citizens to make better use of 22 defunct parking meters by turning them into street art. The New Era Progress writes that local artists submitted designs with the theme, "What I Love about Amherst," for approval by a jury. The Mayor of Amherst used the meter art unveiling to introduce Sweet Briar College's new president, Jo Ellen Parker, who took office July 1. The college participated in the program by sponsoring two of the 22 meters.

University and Town Enter Building Deal in Exchange for Resident Student Tuition
HANCOCK, MI - The Daily Mining Gazette reports that Finlandia University has agreed to purchase an old middle school in Hancock in exchange for 12 years of Finlandia tuition for Hancock schools students accepted to the university.

A special writer for the Centraljersey.com publications provides their preference for social networking that involves people in the flesh as opposed to electronic social networking of Facebook, Twitter, etc.   According to the writer, it is the community gatherings such as occurs in the college town of Princeton, NJ that promote  social conscience over any type of electronic gatherings that may occur anywhere in the world.

College and City Work Together to Revitalize Downtown
WESTFIELD, MA -The Republican newspaper announces the approval of a Barnes & Noble College Bookstores in downtown Westfield. Westfield State College partnered with Barnes & Noble to bring the college bookstore to the city as a way to "place the college front and center in the economic and cultural life of downtown Westfield". The college has already unveiled a revitalization plan that will include leasing housing for 1,000 students in the central business district. The college is also working to bring continuing education courses downtown, and last fall WSC opened an art gallery in downtown.
 
An Ohio College Expands - Into Indiana 
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Indianapolis Star reports on an Ohio college, Franklin University, expanding its educational facilities into the neighboring state of Indiana. Franklin University hopes to capitalize on Indianapolis's enviable position of being a strategic destination for businesses that want to form, grow or expand. Indianapolis provides an ecosystem for organizations to launch and thrive: a solid business community, a motivated work force, and an appreciation for the value of education and optimistic consumers.

Kannapolis seeks $30M for Research Campus
KANNAPOLIS, NC - According to a report by the Charlotte Business Journal, the City of Kannapolis is pursuing up to $30 million in interim financing to jump-start construction and infrastructure projects related to the N.C. Research Campus. The 350-acre life-sciences hub has seen construction slow as the economy faltered. The Rowan-Cabarrus Community Collegebuilding, started in May, is the only project under construction at this time.

Gainesville, FL is researching "soft" bar closings. Bars stop serving alcohol at a certain time, then stays open without alcohol for a period of time. Gainesville PD is looking for communities that have these regulations, pros/cons, town gown issues, police, & business impacts etc.
