Town & Gown Leadership

State College Experiences Successful Arts Festival
STATE COLLEGE, PA - According to an editorial in The Daily Collegian, State College hosted more than 100,000 visitors for its annual Arts Fest, with a fun, safe, quiet and profitable ending. Unlike prior years and events where State College has fallen victim to student parties and riots, the 2009 Arts Festival was a great example of community, government, businesses, students and visitors enjoying a community event through positive celebration.

College Town Continues Professional Development Program with College
CLARKDALE, AZ - The Verde News reports that the Clarkdale Town Council, home to Yavapai College will be considering a facilities use agreement with the college. The town is looking to renew an agreement that supports professional development for its staff members by becoming a sponsoring partner to the college. The town will agree to exchange the use of town facilities in return for four scholarships for staff to attend business management courses.
BUDGET & ECONOMY

University of California System Works to Balance Budget
As written in the New York Times the University of California will use a combination of furloughs, deferred hiring and cuts in academic programs to make up for an $813 million reduction in state financing. Most of the university's campuses will defer at least half of their planned faculty hirings. The Berkeley campus expects to reduce faculty recruitment from the usual 100 positions a year to 10. The Santa Barbara Independent describes how one program, the university's nationally acclaimed UC Washington Center (UCDC), in particular, will be affected. The UCDC is a multi-campus internship and academic exchange program that allows students and faculty from the UC to research, work, and study in the nation's capital.
PARKING & TRANSPORTATION

Virginia College Promotes Joint Transit in Long Range Planning
RADFORD, VA -The Roanoke Times provides an article on Radford University and the city of Radford discussing the possibility of a bus transit system as a way to solve the university's current parking problems, as well as pedestrian safety and long term campus expansion into the city. The school would like to impose a rule banning freshmen from bringing cars to campus, but it can't until alternative transportation is provided. Under consideration for added public transit is a joint partnership with Blacksburg, VA and Virginia Tech to expand their transit system into Radford.
 HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT

College and Community Partners to Promote 'Green' Practices
WILMINGTON, OH - The Columbus Dispatch writes about a joint program between the City of Wilmington and Wilmington College creating a twenty plot garden showcasing the nutritional and economic values of growing your own food. Wilmington, a town heavily hit by the economy may experience job losses in the thousands when its major employer -- air-freight company DHL -- closes its doors this July, eliminating 8,000 jobs in a county with 42,000 residents. In addition to the gardens, the town is attempting to redevelop itself as a breeding ground for environmentally friendly businesses. The Wilmington City Council is expected to designate the town a Green Enterprise Zone, giving financial help to encourage energy-efficient improvements, green companies and training for green-industry jobs.
ALCOHOL

Binge Drinking on Campus
The New York Times editors provided their opinions on Binge Drinking on Campus in a June 30th editorial. The paper asks college presidents to compare the current rates of binge drinking between college students and non-students of the same age groups. The amount of binge drinking - downing five or more drinks in a row - remains high at colleges; it has dropped sharply among people of the same age who do not attend college. Last year, more than 100 college presidents and chancellors called for reconsidering the legal drinking age. New evidence shows that the age-21 requirement has been generally effective in reducing binge drinking - except among college students. The NYT follows their original editorial by publishing letters to the editor from college students, faculty and parents in response the original editorial.
