Durham Experience New Success in Its Downtown
DURHAM, NC - The Duke Chronicle provides its readers with an article on the history, challenges and recent rebirth of the downtown district of Durham. "Decades ago, Durham was a bright spot in the South. Home to the American Tobacco Company, Black Wall Street and the black owned North Carolina Mutual Insurance Company, downtown was a thriving district. But like the rest of the city, the landscape of downtown Durham changed following the departure of the tobacco, textiles and furniture industries. In the early 1990s, though, a band of Durham citizens (and some Duke faculty) organized efforts for revitalizing downtown. It led to the establishment of Downtown Durham Inc. Working with public and, predominantly, private developers, DDI has seen many ideas for downtown go from fantasy to reality."
Flint Becomes A College Town - Discussion Continues FLINT, MI - The Flint Expatriates web blog continues the discussion and opinions whether Flint will make it or should make it as a college town by comparing on-campus experience with one off-campus fraternity house example. | |
HOUSING & PLANNING
UGA Purchases Two Fraternity HousesATHENS, GA - The Associated Press and Athens Banner Herald report that The University of Georgia has paid two fraternities nearly $2.4 million to move to houses off-campus. UGA officials moved five fraternities and plan to build new homes for UGA academic buildings.
Rental landlords oppose more on-campus housing MITCHELL, SD - The Daily Republic writes about Mitchell landlords fighting the construction of new on-campus housing at Mitchell Technical Institute, stating that new apartments will only harm the local rental market, restaurants and local retail businesses. MTI plans to build the apartments to meet an expected increase in students at the school.
Real Estate Investment Trusts Look To Campuses For Growth NEW YORK, NY - The Dow Jones Newswires for the Wall Street Journal published an article announcing a new REIT. The new project is an upscale dormitory at Syracuse University's south campus housing unit set to debut this fall. The dorm will provide students with everything from a surround-sound movie theater to a fitness center. While the economy would suggest poor timing, there is actually a waiting list for the two-bedroom, two-bath units at the New York state university. Education Realty Trust, Inc. and fellow student-housing real-estate investment trust American Campus Communities Inc. are benefiting from interest in lower-cost state schools -- as parents' portfolios fall -- and new programs that let them build dorms on campus. Both report stable pre-leasing numbers for the small, but growing segment of the REITs' communities.
University Circle Wants to Refashion Town-Gown Fit CLEVELAND, OH - The GreenCityBlueLake web blog writes on a recent collaboration by the University Circle leadership with an Urban Land Institute panel, "Emerging University Circle community: A collaborative initiative". Panelists see their work as a full-fledged refashioning of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University's ivied town-gown relationship. UCI is the development, service, and advocacy organization responsible for the growth of University Circle as a premier urban district and world-class center of innovation in health care, education, and arts & culture.According to a program coordinator at the Cleveland Foundation, "the collaborative has the ability to impact not only the big institutions like Case, University Hospital and the Clinic, but also the poorest and underserved populations in the city." |

Neighborhood Response Delays UNM Parking Garage ALBUQUERQUE, NM - According to a report by the College Media network, a dispute between the University and surrounding neighborhoods has postponed construction on an on-campus parking garage. UNM plans to build the parking structure in place of a surface lot providing spaces for 440 vehicles. While the State Board of Finance did not approve plans for the structure during its meeting with UNM officials, the board did, approve plans for another 850 space parking structure at a separate location. Neighborhood Association members said the University should improve biking and walking trails on campus and maybe expand the shuttle service area instead of building parking structures. The Board of Finance agreed that the parking structure contradicts UNM's goal to promote alternative methods of transportation.
Permit Parking may be Instituted in College TownREXBURG, ID - The Standard Journal reports that Rexburg leaders are considering creating a permit system for daytime parking near the Brigham Young University-Idaho campus and overnight parking in the city's downtown parking lots. Permits would be regulated by zones of either "university on-street parking," or "campus vicinity residential parking". |

Bedbug Fears Stall CSU Great Sofa Roundup FORT COLLINS, CO - The Coloradian news and NBC11 news tells that the annual Great Sofa Roundup program will not occur this year in Fort Collins due to a "national rise in bedbug infestations." Town & Gown Leader Forum
Fort Collins, Colorado is looking for states who might have laws that limit "all you can drink" specials. Many of the bars in Fort Collins offer specials like, "women pay $5 and can have unlimited well drinks all night!" Other bars have quarter beer nights. We would like to learn about the types of alcohol regulations that could reduce high-risk drinking behaviors; and specifically limit the "all you can drink" specials. Please respond by e-mail to info@town-gown.net.
