Town & Gown Leadership

Knight Foundation Gives $5 Million Reshape Macon into a Vibrant College Town
MACON, GA - The Georgia Front Page blog announces that the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has granted  Macon and Mercer University $5 Million to reshape the city's first neighborhoods into a vibrant college town connected by leafy roads and bike paths to the city's downtown. The grant includes $3 million to the Community Foundation of Central Georgia to fund residents' best ideas for transforming
the neighborhood, and $2 million to Mercer University to form the College Hill Alliance. The Knight Neighborhood Challenge will invest in residents' own ideas on ways to restore College Hill in Macon.

STUDENTS ARE CREATING COMMUNITY PHILANTHROPY PROGRAMS
WALTHAM, MA - An article in The Boston Globe states that students enrolled in newly created philanthropy courses in colleges and universities are steering thousands of dollars to local charities. At least 10 New England colleges will offer courses next school year, using seed money donated by corporate and family foundations where students draw up mission statements for makeshift foundations, research nonprofits in their communities, and decide how to allocate the raised money. The goal, say professors and donors, is to build upon surging interest in social responsibility among college students and make philanthropy part of the mainstream curriculum. A potential side benefit: helping colleges improve town-gown relations.

Video Shows Student's Thoughts on Flint Becoming a College Town
FLINT, Michigan - A Kettering University student shares his views in a video on how beneficial it may be for Flint, Michigan to become a college town. According to Flint Higher Education mlive.com, a number of college students are working to change negative perceptions of Flint and to plan college-themed events in the city. Students from Kettering, the University of Michigan-Flint, Baker College and Mott Community College are forming a student board to increase collaboration among the local college population.
HOUSING & PLANNING

City Opposes Six-Bedroom Rentals Near Campus
UOIT and Durham College

OSHAWA, ON, CANADA - The Durham Region News reports that the Oshawa Council has turned down a recommendation from City staff, to temporarily allow lodging houses with up to six bedrooms in the neighborhoods near the campuses of UOIT and Durham College. A recent report to the City shows that a rental licensing bylaw has failed to rein in the crisis of student rentals in residential neighborhoods. Now with the recent council action declining additional lodging houses, fewer rental licenses are expected and tenant evictions may be possible. The Universities and the City are offering differing opinions on how to address these student housing needs and issues.
BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Mom and Pop Coffee Houses and National Chains are Both Good for a Local Business Economy
MISSOULA, MT - Writers for Reuters News tell the story of how local "mom and pop" stores such as coffee houses, CAN compete with national chains in their college towns and other towns. Not only can they compete, but the differences between locally owned non-chain stores and nationally franchised stores can create a positive competition good for all of the businesses and the community.

Mid-Sized College Sports Teams Find Ways to Compete in Drawing Fans From The Larger Colleges
BIRMINGHAM, AL - MarketingShift.Com reports that mid-sized college sports programs, such as Samford University in Birmingham do not have the luxury of big conference revenue sharing deals or television revenue from ESPN or other major sports networks. These sports programs must rely on improved and innovative marketing programs to attract fans to the games and to attract the financial support of these fans. Mid-size college marketing programs can be very similar to the local mom and pop stores competing against the national business chains.

 HEALTH AND SAFETY

Santa Monica Fights Smoking
SANTA MONICA, CA - Anti-smoking campaigns are getting very creative in trying to "sell" the practice of non-smoking. Cities such as Santa Monica have begun innovative advertising and promotional campaigns to combat the big budget advertising programs of the major tobacco companies. The New York Times writes that Santa Monica has undertaken a $ 150,000 "campaign, which carries the theme 'Smoking doesn't belong here,' and adapts the children's game of 'One of these things is not like the others" to remind residents and visitors to obey the city's far-reaching no-smoking Laws." Posters, art contests, brochures and more depict three or four images above the words "One of these doesn't belong ..." The images are tailored to the venue in which the ads appear. For instance, ads for restaurants show a sheaf of wheat, a bundle of asparagus spears, a bunch of breadsticks and cigarettes tied together.
Town & Gown Leader Forum

Fort Collins, Colorado is looking for states who might have laws that limit "all you can drink" specials.  Many of the bars in Fort Collins offer specials like, "women pay $5 and can have unlimited well drinks all night!"  Other bars have quarter beer nights.  We would like to learn about the types of alcohol regulations that could reduce high-risk drinking behaviors; and specifically limit the "all you can drink" specials. Please respond by e-mail to info@town-gown.net.
