College Town Requires Job Applicants to Disclose Social Networking Links BOZEMAN, MT - Montana's News Station writes about employment applications for the City of Bozeman that require all applicants to list any and all, current personal or business websites, web pages or memberships on any Internet-based chat rooms, social clubs or forums, to include, but not limited to: Facebook, Google, Yahoo, YouTube.com, MySpace, etc.
Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and How Universities InterpretA Wall Street Journal blog discusses a recent two part series by the Columbus Dispatch looking into allegations how different universities interpret FERPA regulations differently. The series provides an opinion that colleges often use FERPA to restrict information way beyond the privacy of student's academic records. The Columbia Dispatch in Part One, titled "Secrecy 101" writes that the privacy laws kept a student's alcohol abuse a secret prior to the student's death from alcohol poisoning. | |

Charlotte University Launches Community Leadership Center Initiative That Creates an Urban Link to Town & Gown CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Post announces that Johnson C. Smith University has unveiled an initiative to boost neighborhood leadership through the JCSU Center for Applied Leadership and Community Development. According to University officials, the University is seeking to work with small business to mesh capacities to help the community. The institution's first step is to create and train new leaders among JCSU students and faculty, beginning with incoming freshmen and then working with faith-based entities and providing assistance toward neighborhood initiatives.
University, Students and High Schoolers Study College Neighborhood
STARKVILLE, MS - The Commercial Dispatch provides a story about how high school students are working with Mississippi State University students and faculty to study Starkville's Cotton District neighborhood. Starkville Mayor Dan Camp began this new urbanism community adjacent to MSU's campus in 1969 and continues to develop the neighborhood. University, Off-campus landlords and Students Work Together to Clean Up Neighborhoods SPRINGFIELD, MI - The Springfield News Herald reports about Missouri State University program to encourage trash disposal by students and off-campus landlords and discouraging the mass dumping usually occurring during the end of each school semester. |
Discussions and Comments Continue in Massachusetts Regarding Finances Between Colleges and Towns AMHERST, MA - The Amherst Bulletin reports that a Massachusetts's state senator is beginning to question Amherst's attempt to get money from UMass for services the town provides. The town is asking revisit a town-gown agreement three years before it is due to expire and explore a range of topics of mutual interest. Campus officials have estimated the positive economic impact of UMass on Amherst at $172 million a year. This topic continues in the My School Committee Blog by asking " What Do Other Colleges/Universities Do? The web blog looks into relationships between other Massachusetts towns, colleges and school districts. The Eagle Tribune in North Andover, MA provides an opinion on the unintended consequences of taxing colleges and universities in regard to a bill in the Massachusetts state legislature that would make higher education institution property taxable to local governments.

Town & Gown Leader Forum
Fort Collins, Colorado is looking for states who might have laws that limit "all you can drink" specials. Many of the bars in Fort Collins offer specials like, "women pay $5 and can have unlimited well drinks all night!" Other bars have quarter beer nights. We would like to learn about the types of alcohol regulations that could reduce high-risk drinking behaviors; and specifically limit the "all you can drink" specials.
