Town & Gown Leadership

Bloomsburg University President Initiates Meetings on Block Parties
BLOOMSBURG,PA - BloomUtoday News published a letter from Bloomsburg University's President, Dr. David L. Soltz, discussing the asset BU is to the community, contributing 58,000 hours of volunteer service and $57 million in local economic impact, but also addressing the need to control student gatherings and occasional large outdoor parties. Bloomsburg's annual "Block Party started as a fundraiser and grew by word of mouth, the Internet, social networking sites and YouTube, to name a few." The success of discussions about the Block Party have caused the President and the Mayor to consider expanding the Social Gathering Task Force into a Town/Gown Task Force that addresses Block Party and the broader issues of diversity and town climate for all students, faculty and staff.

Lexington, Kentucky Leaders are Traveling to Madison Wisconsin for Ideas

LEXINGTON, KY - Tom Eblen writes an opinion for the Lexington Herald-Leader citing that if "If you want to change, you must expose yourself to new ideas" and how this plays into the Commerce Lexington's annual Leadership Visit. More than 260 of Lexington's government, business and civic leaders will travel to Madison for their 70th annual trip. Participants will include business executives, elected officials, police chief, school officials, along with representatives of four colleges and universities.
Last year's trip was to Austin, Texas with Madison being chosen this year because of the University of Kentucky's goal of becoming a Top 20 research university, which the University of Wisconsin has already achieved. Additionally, Madison and Lexington are similar in size and quality of life yet different in economic development success, per capita income growth and level of education for its citizens.

BUDGETS & ECONOMY

Comments and Editorials are Beginning to Show Up on Providence's Idea to Tax College Students
PROVIDENCE, RI, - Tapped, the Group Blog of The American Prospect news, comments on the mayor of Providence's proposal to tax the city's 25,000 private college students of $150 each semester to help Providence get through its current budget crisis. This tax would be in addition to the taxes students pay via their on and off-campus jobs, sales to students of local eateries and shops, and the contributions into the local rental housing market. According to AP reports, the schools of Providence generate more than $1 billion a year in economic activity and provide about 9,000 jobs. This in a city of 172,000 people.

Creative Class Continue to Move to Cool Cities, Yet Jobs Are Not Keeping Up
PORTLAND, OR - An article in the Wall Street Journal tells how the economy has negatively affected job growth in many mid-sized, creative cities like Portland and Austin, yet the creative youth continue to migrate to these communities. Because one of the most important factors in a city's economic success is the education level of its work force, most cities will not discourage this migration.

Collegetown Columbus is Ohio's Shining Star
COLUMBUS, OH - According to The Urbanophile news blog, Columbus is outperforming all other towns of Ohio in economic success during this challenging economic time. Columbus is showing strong economic and population growth. Having both the state capital and the state's flagship university but only 15% of the state's population, gives Columbus both advantages and disadvantages compared to the rest of Ohio and gives hope to other college towns across the nation.
PLANNING & HOUSING

Panel Approves University-area Housing Plan as Compromise Between Students and Residents
CONWAY, SC - The Sun News reports on a proposal to limit the occupancy of off-campus student housing near Coastal Carolina University in Conway. The proposal now must go to the full Horry County Council for a final vote. The proposal limits the number of nonrelated people who can live in a house to four or fewer, depending on how many bedrooms are in the house. The ordinance follows months of back and forth between the university, students, neighbors and the county to resolve noise, littering and other quality of life issues surrounding student homes in residential communities.

European College Towns Offer Great Environment for American Students
Suzanne Swartz writes for the Work Study Abroad about a number of college towns in Europe that make a great environment for international students to study abroad. Swartz provides a list of optimum cities based upon criteria such as a high percentage of the community has to be students, a significant international student body, an established, perhaps more than one higher education institution, and older college town with a positive town & gown relationship, among others.
POLICE AND ENFORCEMENT

Boulder Paper Editorial Suggests Looking at Fort Collins for Party Registry Ideas
BOULDER, CO - An editorial in the Boulder Daily Camera suggests that Boulder and the University of Colorado monitor and learn from a recent pilot program in Fort Collins, CO where off-campus students can register their house parties at the student center. Should a noise complaint come in during the party, instead of heading straight to the apartment or home, police will call the students and give them 20 minutes to quiet down.
PARKING & TRANSPORTATION

Student parking problems create trash and burglary problems
LONG BEACH, CA - The Daily 49er news reports that continued student parking in residential neighborhoods near the Cal State Long Beach campus cause unsafe traffic conditions as well as added trash and burglary concerns. Since the problem peaked last year, Cal State Long Beach has added free public transportation for students, unused on-campus student parking spaces, and now, the City is looking at further parking restrictions in the nearby neighborhood areas.
