Town & Gown Leadership

College Town Leaders Work to Improve Relations by Looking at the History of the Divide
ELLENSBURG, WA - The Daily Record news provides an article on the "invisible curtain" that separates Central Washington University staff and students from Ellensburg's permanent residents. Though the town and gown divide can be dated back to 1891, City officials and the new President of CWU are working to turn the tide through understanding the history and seizing the opportunities of existing positive relations.

City-University Partner for Health Care Services
CLEMSON, SC - The Daily Journal Messenger reports on the City of Clemson's renewal of a new program with Clemson University's Joseph F. Sullivan Center, to provide acute care services for city employees and their dependents. In completing the first year of the pilot, the program has been successful in helping to meet one of the program strategies of reducing the overall cost of health care and insurance costs to the employer and employee. City Administrator Rick Cotton said the partnership allows city employees to have "quick, more accessible health care" and assist those who do not currently have access to health care.

College and City working to solve student off-campus parking problems in Chula Vista
CHULA VISTA, CA - A recent article from the Union-Tribune news describes parking conditions in neighborhoods of Chula Vista near Southwestern College and how the city and college and community are working together to address the problems. Cars sometimes block driveways, occasionally impede trash collection and often prevent street sweepers from making curbside passes. The college is already planning a campaign to promote on-campus parking to include e-mails, posters, fliers and other ways to remind students about parking options and will inform students on financial aid that they can get a semester pass for $20. Day passes are $3.

Op/Ed Offers Insight to Chico Community as More Than a Party Place

CHICO, CA - An Op/Ed article from The Orion news provides a student editor's opinion that "lack of things to do and lack of things with purpose" cannot be the sole problem justifying the party scene at Chico State University. "Our community hasn't run dry on meaningful activities. What we lack is will, the will to live beyond an unending pursuit of the next pleasurable moment." Such partying resulted in recent out of control parties and rioting. The Town and Gown committee, a group of student, faculty and community leaders are meeting to brainstorm ways to improve the strained relationship between the school and the town. Riots and intense partying have put students at odds with the community. Town and Gown is striving to solve the problem.
