Town & Gown Celebration in Macomb, ILMacomb, Ill. - The Macomb Journal announces an annual Celebration Event between Western Illinois University and the City of Macomb and hosted by the Western Alumni Association. WIU President Al Goldfarb, Macomb Mayor Mick Wisslead and Western Alumni Association officials will lead the celebration of the partnership between the city and the University. The 2009 Honorary Alumni Award and the Town and Gown Award will also be presented.
Student Activist Leads the Way for Improved Town & Gown Communication
EASTON, PA - The Two Rivers Daily web blog tells readers about an energetic Lafayette student leading the way toward better town and gown communication in this college community. This Lafayette junior and other student partners have organized a town/gown forum for local community leaders to discuss with students and college officials the need for improved communication, downtown and event development and neighborhood opportunities.
Evanston Alderman Candidates Debate for Area College StudentsEVANSTON, IL - North by Northwestern reports on a recent City Alderman candidate's debate organized by the Northwestern University Public Interest Committee. Candidates answered selected questions from the Northwestern students and were able to ask each other questions. The students' concerns were centered on how to improve the relationship between Evanston and Northwestern. Other issues included students' interests in not participating in local elections in lieu of voting in their own hometowns.
Candidates Present Visions for New HavenNEW HAVEN, CT - New Haven's municipal electorate is divided among thirty wards with one ward made up almost in entirety by Yale students. The Design New Haven web blog interviews the three candidates for the vacant seat of the "Yale ward", all Yale students. Issues for the "Yale ward" and other New Haven communities that the candidates will have to address include: economic development, deficient public schools, "town-gown" relations, livable streets, and community policing.
Competition Improves Recycling Efforts WHITEWATER, WI - An article in the Gazettextra of Janesville, WI reports on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's efforts to improve recycling of garbage by joining a 500 college national competition, RecycleMania. The recycle-a-thon is a 10 week competition of schools to see which school collected the largest amount of recyclables per person as well as which school generated the least amount of garbage per person. |

Entrepreneurial College CommunitiesANN ARBOR, MI - Mark Maynard writes in his Markmaynard.com blog about a recent symposium held in Ann Arbor with a guest speaker, a venture capitalist from Boulder, CO. The topic, "Building an Entrepreneurial Community: Lessons from Boulder, CO". The author discusses some of the entrepreneurial activities taking place in the college town of Boulder and compares them to what could be done in Ann Arbor, including horizontal versus vertical emphasis in professional disciplines and business sectors. Other examples of venture capital building communities were Silicon Valley in California, Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Austin, and the Research Triangle area of North Carolina.
College towns continue to be cited for good news in a struggling economyLUBBOCK, TX - KCBD TV11 in Lubbock, KSTU-TV-13 in Salt Lake City, UT and Fox National News reporting from Gainesville, Fl have followed the nation's recent attention of college towns surviving in times of economic downturns by reporting on unemployment and the economy of these college towns. University campuses and university medical centers are cited as contributing assets to these communities in outperforming a national economy. |

Town and Gown Work Together on Community Alcohol Discussions MANKATO, MN - According to the Minnesota State University Reporter News, MSU and the Mankato community are coming together to begin a series of forums to discuss different aspects of alcohol and high risk drinking. A primary goal of the forums is for students to be included in the discussions and to be part of the solutions. The first forum will bring students together with local law enforcement officers. Future themes will include impaired driving, campus interference with off-campus alcohol violations and ways to increase awareness and early prevention of alcohol abuse.
College of Holy Cross awarded funds for work against high risk drinkingThe Worcester Telegram & Gazette News announced that "Outside The Classroom," a national alcohol prevention organization, has awarded the College of the Holy Cross with $10,000 for its work combating high-risk drinking among college students and to further strengthen alcohol prevention programs on campus. | |
