Town & Gown Leadership

Evanston and Northwestern Witness Town & Gown Relation Changes
EVANSTON, IL - The Daily Northwestern provides the second installment in a five-part series analyzing the future of  Northwestern University's relations with the Evanston community. Town Gown relations are discussed in the context of taxes, municipal services and community benefit.  Northwestern's new President, Morton Schapiro, is said to have nurtured very strong relations between Williamston, MA and Williams College, prior to moving to Northwestern.

California College Town Coming Together with University
STOCKTON, CA -The Record.Net writes on its Op/Ed page how the University of the Pacific is working hard to improve the Town & Gown relationship with its nearby community. Though it has not always been the experience, the University, through students, faculty and administration are now undertaking initiatives to support the Stockton community. The author provides an opinion that the community could add some of their own initiatives to include "Turning next season's game against Cal into a celebration of the bond between Stockton and Pacific, and the potential for growth. The game is tentatively scheduled for Dec. 9 at Stockton Arena, literally a stone's throw from where Thomason and others played at the Stockton Memorial Civic Auditorium. Make sure there are 9,000 fans from the college and from all parts of Stockton in attendance, even if tickets need to be given away or underwritten by sponsors. Nothing will be accomplished if there are 3,000 fans and 6,000 empty seats at the arena. Maybe the Tigers could wear special uniforms that read "Stockton."

Yale Students Assist Community With Health Assessments
NEW HAVEN, CT -  As reported by the Yale Daily News, more than 140 New Haven residents received personal health report cards during the Church Street South Community Health Fair. The Health Fair was organized and run by Yale students. The fair began the Yale Health Initiation Task Force's campus wide coalition to provide health care information and services to the communities around the Yale campus. Residents in attendance said that the fair was effective in telling the story of the lack of accessible health care information available in New Haven.

College and Community Work to Create New Children's Center Classroom
MEADVILLE, PA - The Meadville Tribune reported that the Meadville Children's center has a new classroom because both the not-for-profit center and its landlord, Allegheny College, needed some more space - and both worked together to get it. "First, we identified a need for additional classroom space on campus for academic programs," Larry Lee, Allegheny's associate vice president for finance and planning, recalled. "We have moved several academic departments into Odd Fellows (the former Odd Fellows Building at the intersection of North Main and Allegheny streets where the center makes its home), so it made sense for us to have classroom space near those departments." Second, Lee continued, "the center had communicated to us that while their space was adequate, it wasn't meeting expectations for the programs they wanted to do." "Our need and their need came together," Lee said. "We had to find them a new home - and at the same time, it allowed us to meet their expanded programming needs."
Planning and Housing in College Towns

Town & Gown  Teams with Developers for More Housing
WESTVILLE, MA -  The Boston Business Journal writes that the town of  Westfield and Westfield State College are working together to try to increase student housing and at the same time, make Westfield more of a " College Town".  Faced with the need to house more students, WSC recently came up with a novel way to construct new dorms without paying any of the costs. The college is seeking proposals from private developers to build a dorm in the downtown area. Developers would be able to incorporate restaurants and movie theaters to attract business. In return, WSC would guarantee 10 years occupancy.
Alcohol & Code Enforcement in College Towns

Debate over On-Campus Gun Rights
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The student newspaper of Rider University, The Rider News, reports on a gun lobby and the Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus are debating each other on the issue of allowing - or not allowing - guns on college campuses. National gun lobbies have recently begun to call for legislation that would stop colleges and universities from regulating firearms on campuses to help students and staff defend themselves. The Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus opposing  the gun lobby is sending letters to the presidents of colleges and universities across the country.  The letters are asking the Universities to sign onto a resolution that strictly opposes the proposed legislation. As of Feb. 12, 2009, 36 schools from 16 different states have signed in support of the campaign.

Noise Ordinance Being Considered
LONDON, ONTARIO, CANADA - The author of  From My Bottom Step Blog, Greg Fowler, describes a proposed noise ordinance and public comments  being considered by the City of London. Citizens of several neighborhoods and students of the University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College gave their views on the need of a by-law providing increased penalties for excessive noise.
Economic Development

US College Town Helps Promote Local Economic Development Worldwide
Washington, DC - ICMA News reports that Auburn, Alabama is participating as a judge with other government and private sector agencies in ICMA training applying their knowledge and skills by assisting Serbian cities with local economic development programs. The event is part of economic development training by ICMA in the USAID-funded Municipal Economic Growth Activity (MEGA) program. Participant cities participating in the ICMA training applied their knowledge and skills by setting up booths and exhibits designed to attract business to their communities, just as they would at a "real" trade fair.
