California State University-Chico President Discusses Shaping the Shared Future between Chico, CA and CSUC CHICO, CA - President Paul J. Zingg provides an editorial in the News Review sharing his thoughts on the town and gown relationship between the Chico community and California State University-Chico. President Zingg tells how neither the university nor the city will prosper without the other, and how the two connect, first and foremost, through a set of values that are as critical to the functioning of a university as they are to the success of a city. Fundamentally, these are reason and respect, civility and community, and a strong sense of place and purpose, and how this is so important during these times of challenges and opportunities.

Edison State College to replace security guards with armed police
Fort Myers, FL - The NEWS-PRESS reports that Edison State College with campuses in Collier, Charlotte, Lee and Hendry counties in Florida will make the natural transition to replace security officers with sworn police officers. Currently, the security officers cannot issue citations, evict rule breakers from campus or enforce college policies and state laws. To start, the Fort Myers campus will have two sworn officers, while the Naples and Punta Gorda campuses will each have one. The plan is to gradually build a force, beginning in April while phasing out private security. The uniformed officers will be certified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and be able to make arrests, issue citations and pursue violators off campus. They can enforce campus rules, county regulations and state laws.
New Zealand Rampage Offers Challenges and Opportunity DUNEDIN, New Zealand - The New Zealand Herald reported on an out of control event in Dunedin where nearly 2000 drunken participants and onlookers at the Otago University Students Association annual toga parade smashed shop and car windows and hurled garbage in Dunedin's main street. The participants, some of whom were left bloodied by the action, were taking part in the annual four-block march on George St to the Octagon, in the city centre. After the parade, George St was littered with broken glass, vomit, broken tables, smashed signs and damaged cars. The students' behavior was fuelled by residents living in apartments on the parade route, who threw eggs at them as they passed on the street below. An Op/Ed piece in the Otago Daily Times on the same incident compares the event with festivals and parties, such as a motorcycle convention and rugby tournament are held in nearby communities with very different results. | |
