Emory Receives Award for Civic Engagement
ATLANTA, GA - Emory University's student newspaper, The Emory Wheel, announces that Emory University has received the 2008 Presidential Award for General Community Service. This award is the highest federal recognition given to colleges and universities for their commitment to community service, service-learning and civic engagement. Emory joined five other institutions, as the only private institution, for the award out of 635 institutions nominated. Emory, Michigan State and California State University Fresno were recognized for "breadth and quality" of its service. Duke University, University of Missouri-Kansas City and Brookhaven College received awards for special focus of lowering school dropout rates and preparing students for college. The Corporation for National and Community Service oversees these awards. 
 
The College of New Jersey and Town of Ewing hold Town & Gown Forum
EWING, NJ - Students of The College of New Jersey and Ewing residents and landlords met during the College's sixth annual Good Neighbor forum held February 4th. According to The Signal news The Township and College Together (TACT) cosponsored the event along with the Student Government Association. TACT is a town & gown group including residents, elected officials, town and campus police, and students of TCNJ and Rider University. The event, titled, " Opening the Door for Lasting Partnerships" focused on improved communication between residents, landlords, students, town officials and campus administration.

St. Scholastica Day - February 10th. The Conservative History Journal gives an account of the St. Scholatica Day riots of February 10, 1354 and introduction of the first town & gown issues leading to the location of the University of Cambridge. Hint - riots were from a dispute between students and towns people over alcohol.

College Towns Lead Nation for being Bike Friendly
NORMAN, OK - The Norman Transcripts reviews Blake Gumprecht's book "The American College Town" for comparisons of the bicycle friendly college towns of Norman, OK and Davis, CA. The comparison talks about biking as no longer a financial necessity for college students but now an environmentally friendly and yes, even patriotic thing to do. 

DAVIS, CA - The Daily Democrat  and Power Assisted Bikes.com quote the League of American Bicyclists highlighting Davis as one of only three platinum level cities in the US, joining other college towns of Portland, OR and Boulder, CO. Davis having the highest per capita bicycle use in America. Davis, in the 1960's, was the first city in the US to create designated on-street bike lanes and now will host the countries premier bike race, the 2009 Amgen Tour of California. Tour de France Champion, Lance Armstrong, will make an American comeback in this race.
 
Collin College and Spring Creek Community Work Together on 3 Year Strategic Plan
PLANO, TX - The Plano Courier Star writes that Collin College - Spring Creek Campus is asking for input from the community for the campus' three-year strategic plan. Trustess for the Collin College are inviting community members for the first time to attend a town Hall type meeting to provide a forum for the community to air their wants and needs in relation to the college.

Baltimore Collegetown Network Reports Region's Colleges and Universities Contribute $17 Billion to Local Economy
BALTIMORE, MD - Reuters News reports that a first of its kind study of the Baltimore Collegetown Network shows a regional economic impact of over $17 Billion to the Baltimore Region by its 16 public and private colleges and universities. This economic impact includes 162,000 jobs created by the institutions. "This report emphasizes the role of higher education as an industry and its importance to regional economic, workforce, social and cultural development," said Kristen Campbell, Executive Director of the Baltimore Collegetown Network. " Colleges and universities are major and significant drivers in the Baltimore economy and important partners in the future growth of the region."
 
Businesses in New York College Town Looking to Cash In on Students Living Downtown
BINGHAMTON, NY - According to the Press & Sun Bulletin, developers in the college town of Binghamton are looking to take advantage of students wishing to live in a downtown environment near their college. Developers believe that students want to live in an area of high activity, close to campus, close to public transportation and close to restaurants and bars. City officials support the concept because increased students and young professionals mean increased shops and restaurants.

Town of Elon Looking at an Ordinance to Limit Parties in Residential Areas by Penalizing Property Owners
ELON, NC - As reported by The Times News of Burlington, NC, the Town of Elon's Board of Alderman are discussing an ordinance to increase enforcement on repeat noise ordinance offenders by fining property owners for repeat violations issued at their properties. Town Aldermen said that the noise ordinances would be more effective if they had financial burdens placed on the property owners. The proposed changes result from a growing number of complaints from town residents of loud parties at homes occupied by college students.
 
Loyola Maramount and LAPD Working Together in Patrolling Off-campus Student Parties
WESTCHESTER, CA - Loyola Marymount University (LMU) and the Pacific division of the Los Angeles Police Department have announces new initiatives to reduce and discourage unruly behavior by students off campus as reported in The Argonaut. The new initiatives are an effort to address citizen complaints of out-of-control parties near the Loyola campus. Changes from past enforcement policies now enable a first time offender citation for noise violations instead of a warning, fines can reach up to $1000 for offenders and property owners and those who receive citations must have a court appearance. LMU officers can issue fines or community service to students who have been cited off-campus by the police. LMU officers will enforce public safety ordinances off-campus over a set boundary area covering most of the known "party house" locations.
 
UCONN's Spring Weekend Looks to be Curb Non-Sanctioned Parties
MANSFIELD, CT - University of Connecticut's Student Life Committee, as reported by The Daily Campus, recommended to the UCONN Board of Trustees for an improved, but more restrictive Spring Weekend tradition held in the Mansfield community. Spring Weekend is an annual event where 20,000 students from regional colleges gather in the Mansfield / Storrs Community with many non-students for university sponsored events of concerts and games but also many non-sponsored events of drinking and partying, as described by the Journal Inquirer. Recommendations by the students included stricter enforcement by the Town on property owners and businesses catering to the students.
 
College Station to Enact Rental Housing Ordinance
COLLEGE STATION, TX - A recent blog by Cassie Smith on Left of College Station talks about College Station's new requirement for certain landlords to register with the City. A $15 annual registration fee will be required to offset costs to create a database of rental properties and each's emergency contact information. The goal of the program is overall preservation of neighborhood integrity. A component of the preservation is to serve as an incentive for landlords to enforce occupancy limits, maintain sanitary conditions and ensure pets are properly cared for.
