Clemson Holds Annual Joint City University Legislative Breakfast for State Legislators
CLEMSON, S.C. - As covered by the Daily Journal Messenger, Clemson University President James F Barker and City of Clemson Mayor Larry W Abernathy presented a unified legislative agenda to members of the South Carolina state legislature during the annual Joint City University Advisory Committee Legislative Breakfast held in Clemson football stadium's west end zone conference room. The Clemson JCUAB sponsored the event hosting approximately fifty city and university officials and members of the local delegation of the South Carolina Legislature. President Barker and Mayor Abernathy both stressed the need for additional flexibility and accountability be given to towns and universities to help address the current economic conditions of the state and the country and to be able to take advantage of opportunities created by this same and global economy. Mayor Abernathy cited how given past opportunities, the City and University have partnered to jointly provide fire service, public transit, and most recently, the International Town & Gown Association. | |
Town & Gown Leadership - College Town Partnerships
LAKE FOREST, IL - A recent editorial in The Stentor describes the relationship between Lake Forest College and the Lake Forest community as frosty at best. While there are a number of ways younger residents and students share common facilities, there are a number of ways the school and community could work together to improve town and college relations.
TOWSON, MD - An article in the student newspaper for Towson University, The Towerlight, states that because of recent student body increases, Towson University students have the option to complete their four year degrees as Towson students at Harford Community College. The recent memorandum of understanding between HCC and TU is the result of over ten years of collaboration between the two schools. What began with partnering for graduate level degrees now also allows undergraduate programs to be taken by TU students at HCC.
BERKELEY, CA - As reported by Government Technology magazine, California students are being provided equipment and training for their assistance with disaster response needs. The City of Berkeley and the University of California Berkeley have teamed together to train college students in disaster response and equip the students with supplies necessary for assistance. Over 2,000 students receive basic emergency supplies and also receive training in areas of basic preparedness, fire suppression, disaster first aid and others.
MIDDLETOWN, CT - The Wesleyan Argus news reports on a recent forum on Town-Gown Issues organized by the Students for a Democratic Society entitled " Tear Down that Wall?" The forum presented an opportunity for discussion from students and a panel of faculty members and representatives from the Center for Community Partnerships. The discussion centered around the successes and challenges of the town-gown relations from both a current and historical perspective. |
College Town Planning & Housing
CAMBRIDGE, MA - The Department of Cambridge Community Development has posted The Town Gown Report of the Mayor's Committee on University-Community Relations. In 1991, The Mayor's Committee issued a report on town & gown relations between Cambridge and its four institutions of higher education, Cambridge College, Harvard University, Lesley University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the committee's recommendations to contribute to a mutually beneficial relationship, was to conduct an annual joint review of university and community needs and plans. Each school submits an annual Town Gown Annual report and presents to the Cambridge Planning Board.

COLLEGE PARK, MD - Dan Reed writes an Opinion for The Diamondback on "Coffee: A Small step for students, a giant leap for city" comparing College Park's coffee scene to Boulder, Colorado's. Reed ties the thriving presence of coffee houses and music hubs such as Boulder's with a link to a creative and innovative population being sought by high tech start-up companies. Reed quotes authors Richard Florida and Ben Casnocha linking socially vibrant communities with strong local economies.
ELLENSBURG, WA - The Daily Record News writes how Ellensburg and Central Washington University are working to change perceptions of a town & gown divide by the recent appointment of a student to the Ellensburg Downtown Association Board of Directors. The new position acts as student liaison for the organization. Current joint projects between the university and the town include a safe ride system for downtown patrons, a regional retail project and open communication between students and downtown merchants.
PALO ALTO, CA - According to The Santa Clara , University Avenue in Palo Alto is enjoying the best of both business worlds, "townies by day" shopping and eating and university students from Stanford, Menio College and Foothill College, by night, enjoying restaurants and occasional musical events. The variety of shops and services appealing to the wide cross section of customers include international restaurants, alternative independent films, hookah bars, and even personal hot tub rentals.
WILMINGTON, NC - The Greater Wilmington Business Journal reports that Cape Fear Community College is taking advantage of a $164 million bond issue approval and is pursuing ambitious plans for a downtown campus in an attempt to address overcrowded classrooms, inadequate parking and growing enrollment. With enrollment at 25,000 students, President Eric McKeithan disregarded their consultants first recommendation of leaving downtown and expanding outside of town and chose to follow their second recommendation to grow fully in the downtown area as well as at its northern campus. In addition to 25,000 students, over 450 employees attend the college and frequent downtown businesses.
ANN ARBOR, MI - The Ann Arbor News writes that even with the economy in a recession, Ann Arbor may be in an ideal position to grow and prosper once the recession subsides. Ann Arbor business owners and the Ann Arbor Area Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to provide bus tours to existing and potential business leaders thinking of locating a company in the Ann Arbor region. The economic development tour is patterned after a twenty year old program given by the Chamber's leadership program but designed to showcase the area's community and real estate development. |
Alcohol and Enforcement in College Communities
BRIDGEPORT / FAIRFIELD, CT - Sacred Heart University's campus paper, The Spectrum, reports that campus security is working with the local police agencies of Fairfield and Bridgeport to eliminate underage drinking. Dean of Students, Larry Wielk is quoted " We have a responsibility to our local community to make certain our students are being appropriate." Campus security patrols off-campus neighborhoods and reports suspicious gatherings or parties to the local police.
THORNBURY, PA - A report by the Daily Times writes that Cheyney University has issued a moratorium on on-campus parties after a fight broke out at a recent party and the incident was aired on YouTube. Cheyney President Michelle Howard-Vital has created a task force to investigate the incident and recommend policy changes that ensures the safety of students. Technology of cell phones helped to grow the party to by some accounts, 700 people in the 300 capacity room, and helped to place the party's aftermath on web sites. | |
