Town & Gown Leadership - College Town Partnerships
CORVALLIS, OR - According to an Associated Press article in the Seattle-Post Intelligencer and based upon an Environmental Protection Agency report, Corvallis, OR, home to Oregon State University, leads the nation for towns in utilizing renewable energy, or "green power use". Consumers in Corvallis are given the option to purchase power from coal-fired generators or from renewable source generators like wind, solar and biomass. Oregon State University is the largest single customer of Corvallis for the "green power".
EVANSTON, IL - In an article by Kirstin Maguire for The Daily Northwestern, the author asks " What does Northwestern owe Evanston?" A recent Mayoral election has brought the attention of the town & gown partnership between Evanston and Northwestern University to the forefront. Candidates explore the existing relationship between college and community and the opportunities further partnering and understanding could bring. MIDDLETOWN, CT - A student oriented blog, the WESLEYING advertises an upcoming meeting by Wesleyan University for a "campaign for a more open campus and better relations with the Middletown community, and we want your input. What do you think of Middletown? How do you feel about Wes's relations with Middletown? How dfo you feel about opening campus and integrating more with Middletown? CARBONDALE, IL - Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Chancellor Samuel Goldman, writes a guest column for the The Southern giving reason for the optimism about SIUC enrollment. Chancellor Goldman provides an analysis of SIUC's past and current student enrollment and provides new initiatives by SUIC to increase enrollment for fall 2009. |
College Town Planning & Housing
BOSTON, MA - BCHeights.com writes about Boston College students joining together on four Sundays a semester to pick up trash and generally clean up Boston neighborhoods around the BC campus. The " Breakfast Club" program is a joint effort by the Office of the Dean of Student Development and the Off-Campus Student Council. A vision of the program is to provide off-campus students a means to participate and contribute to their community in a positive manner. "The Breakfast Club attempts to achieve the four goals of improving student-neighbor relations off-campus, partaking in the green initiative, living out the Jesuit mission of service and building personal relationships between administration and off-campus students" according to one of the groups leaders.

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Globe provides an article on "College towns are catalogs of fun things to do". The article discusses college towns as destinations for travelers looking for reasonably priced attractions and looking to get away from national chain stores. The Globe lists several New England college towns and the attractions that they offer.

Alcohol in College Communities
SOUTH BEND, IN - WSBT2 reports by Tribune writer Liz Harter, on Notre Dame students receiving a lecture on " Alcohol, Parties and the Law". The ND student Government sponsored the lecture by the executive director of the Coalition for Student and Academic Rights to help students better understand rights and responsibilities of off-campus partying. C.L. Lindsay, the lecturer, gave examples of under age students showing off drinking and partying pictures on social network web sites such as Facebook.
SAN MARCOS, CA - As reported by the Union Tribune, the City of San Marcos, California is hosting a workshop for businesses that sell alcoholic beverages to discuss a proposed ordinance requiring bartenders, wait staff and sales clerks to undergo specific alcohol training, the "Responsible Beverage Sales and Service ordinance". San Marcos was determined by the San Diego County Alcohol and Drug Services agency as a "hot spot for alcohol-related incidents". San Marcos is home to a university and a junior college.
AUSTIN, TX - The Times of India reports on a recent study by the University of Texas School of Public Health that" has found that brief and personal intervention can significantly reduce drinking among risky college drinkers". Researchers believe using commercially available tools, like e-CHUG, is a step that can be used to reduce binge drinking by college students. CHICO, CA - A Letter to the Editor of the Chico Enterprise Record writes that work is needed to prevent student deaths after five deaths of young adult students have occurred in 19 months. The letter provides a dozen recommendations to reduce the risks of such tragedies due to alcohol and/or drug use. The dozen recommendations include , making a town & gown committee active year around and providing alcohol awareness educational and training campaigns for students and bar/restaurant workers.
PHILADELPHIA, PA - Penn, Rutgers and other schools are offering alternative housing, on and off-campus, for students wishing to live and learn in an alcohol free environment as reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer. While a number of schools are offering housing alternatives for alcohol free environments, only a handful are providing specialized housing for students in recovery from alcohol or drug abuse. According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, "half of full-time college students, many of whom are younger than the legal drinking age of 21, binge drink or abuse prescription or illegal drugs. CHICO, CA - The Oroville Mercury Register writes that Butte and Chico college leaders condemn the civil disruption in Chico where four arrests, a burn injury and damaged police cars occurred in one evening after an unruly party. Both campus and community leaders met to publicly condemn the actions and to begin a planning process "for a town/gown meeting to talk about why does this happen, how can we avoid it, what to do when it happens".
