Colleges, Universities and Communities Address Economic Downturns
BATON ROUGE, LA - The student daily newspaper for Louisiana State University, The Reveille, writes that LSU administrators are preparing budget scenerios for state budget cuts of up to 30% for the 2009-2010 school year. LSU system schools have already witnessed state budget cuts of 4.6% for the current fiscal year. The Reveille reports that other state schools, Missouri, Maryland, Nevada, Idaho are facing similar challenges, and with Vermont actually proposing to increase state funding by 20%.
BOSTON, MA - Boston.com reports that Brandais University, due to economic conditions, decreasing endowment and loss of financial support from donors directly affected by the Bernard Madoff scandal, will close the Rose Art Museum and sell its art collection. This sale, is but one of several cost saving and revenue generating options being acted upon to address the current financial shortfalls of this private liberal arts college. |
College Town Planning, Housing
BUFFALO, NY - The Spectrum writes about transformation of an older Buffalo apartment building into a new gated community designed for college students assembling from the University of Buffalo and several other nearby colleges. The collegiate village, a private development, offers many of the same "on-campus" amenities of resident advisors, on-site security, transportation to/from campus, variable leasing arrangements and a host of amenities.
BOSTON, MA - According to The Boston Globe, the Brighton neighborhood task force charged with reviewing a 10 year, $1 Billion proposal by Boston College for expansion, has recommended that city officials allow a 150 student dormitory on a site once owned by the Archdiocese of Boston.
FORT COLLINS, CO - The Fort Collins, CO city council is set to consider further restrictions to its U+2 rental housing regulations preventing more than three unrelated people from living together, as reported by the The Rocky Mountain Collegian. Changes to the U+2 law would revise the definition of the term "family" and would allow the city to issue an immediate citation instead of a "warning".

Town & Gown Leadership and Ideas
PARIS, ME - The Sun Journal of Lewiston reports on an upcoming television documentary about " Becoming a College Town" through the creation of a higher education complex for Western Maine University and the Community College Center in Paris, Maine. After a two and one-half year project, the documentary will air on Norway-Paris Community Television. According to its producer, Marg Medd, "Becoming a College Town: An Investment in Collaborative Leadership", "is meant for communities to understand why involvement matters, what leadership means, how people can come together".
STATE COLLEGE, PA - PSU Columnist, Jessica Turnbill for The Daily Collegian writes that supporters for diversity won a victory in Nashville when a city sponsored special election to make English the only language for city business, was defeated. The special election brought out a record number of voters, nearly 75,000 ballots cast.
DEMOREST, GA - As written by The Piedmont College Navigator, students of Piedmont College are held accountable for actions both on and off campus. Three students were arrested in the adjoining town, off campus, for underage alcohol consumption. Though arrested by local authorities, through an agreement with local law enforcement agencies, the students will be charged and punished by Piedmont College. The College cites the student behavioral code that " violations of local, state, or federal law, on or off campus, are prohibited" in enacting the law enforcement agreement.
STARKVILLE, MS - A new program on the campus of Mississippi State University has been a success, too much. The Reflector reports that MSU's provision of bicycles for faculty and student use on campus has been so well used that students are taking bikes off campus and against program regulations. | |
