Editorial by Centre Daily Times

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Only a narrow avenue - crossed regularly by students who live, shop and refresh themselves downtown and State College residents who work, study or recreate on campus - separates Penn State from its host municipality.

Yet the two worlds - town and gown - can sometimes seem millions of miles apart.

Those on one side often view those on the other as transients, if not marauders, with no consideration for the community or thought of becoming part of it. Those on the other often feel unwelcome except for the money that can be made from them.

Hands, from time to time, reach across the divide, and some even clasp others outstretched toward them.

Gunshot Detection System Arms Johns Hopkins University

by By Elaine Rundle, Government Technology

BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins University,
located in Baltimore, now has the capability to track
gunshots at its Homewood campus and the off-site
Charles Village neighborhood where many of the school's students and employees reside. The
Homewood campus -- which according to the university's Web site, is its main academic and administrative center -- doesn't include the health system, which is located in east Baltimore.

Launched in November 2008, the gunshot detection system is composed of 93 sensors that are installed on city-owned streetlights and off-campus university buildings. The sensors detect the acoustic signature from a gunshot and wirelessly transmit the information to a receiving station. According to the press release, the information is then forwarded over a secure network to the communication center, and this process takes three to five seconds. Located at the campus communication center is a 40-inch LCD screen that displays the gunshot's location and the nearest address and building for dispatch.

The Pacific Northwest College of Art takes over the Museum of Contemporary Craft

by D.K. Row, The Oregonian

PORTLAND, OR -  It was only a matter of time before one of Portland's major arts institutions got bailed out during this recession. And it happened when the ailing Museum of Contemporary Craft found a financial lifeline in the Pacific Northwest College of Art.
Otter Tail proposes to retrofit entire town, college

The Daily Journal

Fergus Falls, MN - Imagine all of the residents of a small rural community working together to reduce the electrical use of their entire town. That's what Otter Tail Power Company envisioned when it designed its Minnesota Conservation Improvement Program (CIP) for 2009 and 2010.

Approved by the Minnesota Office of Energy Security in November, the plan includes large pilot projects for
retrofitting one community and one college.

"To our knowledge, nothing like this has ever been
done," said Kim Pederson, Otter Tail Power Company's
manager, market planning. "It's a unique way to help
people understand that the energy choices they make and the technologies they use impact everyone.
We're facing serious energy challenges and it will take teamwork to solve them."

Saddleback enrollment up thanks in part to poor economy

by Shawn Heavlin-Martinez,The Lariat

MISSION VIEJO,CA - Amid the turbulent economy, Saddleback College has become home for hundreds of
new students. The number of students enrolled has jumped sharply from last year's 22,816. As of Jan. 16, there were 24,259 enrolled.

"A number of factors have contributed to this rise in student population," said Director of Admissions Jane Rosenkrans, "most prominently the troubled economy."

Spring Semester Kicks Off At Fresno State With Less Students Than Normal

by KMPH FOX 26

FRESNO, CA - Fresno State students returned to campus on Wednesday, with many students eager to get the semester underway.

Classes may seem a little smaller this semester however, because 500 fewer students returned to campus as a result of the state budget crunch.

University President John Welty says the school is facing a "daunting" situation that will bring painful moments to the campus community over the next year. Welty says the school will continue to implement a hiring freeze that was declared last year.
