COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY NAMED A CARNEGIE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT UNIVERSITY

by Emily Narvaes Wilmsen, Colorado State News & Information

FORT COLLINS, CO - Colorado State University's reputation for outreach and community partnerships has earned it a label as a Carnegie Community Engagement university, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has announced.

A Carnegie Community Engagement University is one that encourages collaboration between the institution and the larger communities "for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity," according to the organization. In Colorado State's case, engagement includes curricular engagement as well as outreach and partnerships.

University of Redlands 'Incredible achievements' in 2008 for university
by Megan McClain, Redlands Daily Facts

REDLANDS, CA - The University of Redlands, fresh from a yearlong centennial celebration, had a year full of academic and student achievements, as well as changes to the university that are bringing it into the 21st century.

"This has been another great year for the University of Redlands," said Char Burgess, vice president and dean
of student life at the University of Redlands, who said the "students led the way with some incredible
achievements this past year."....

The University of Redlands' Town and Gown, which
works throughout the year to foster the relationship
between the university and the local community,
hosted its annual Performing Arts Sampler in
January. The event featured performances from
Giuseppe Verdi's opera "La Traviata," brief Shakespeare performances and an excerpt from Steve Martin's comedy "The Underpants."

The Town and Gown organization honored women at its annual "Women of Distinction" luncheon on March 15, which was themed "Dream Achieve Inspire." The event featured a Town and Gown scholarship recipient and speaker Magness Carroll, director of entertainment for Disney theme parks and properties worldwide. The
organization also invited the public in February to a community forum led by Tom Bowman, who talked about California's opportunities and challenges in the fight against global warming.

A fresh start for town, gown -
OUR VIEW

Editorial by The Kingston Whig Standard

Kingston, Ontario, Canada -With the cancellation of homecoming for the next two years, the relationship between Queen's students and Kingstonians may have a chance to repair itself.

For the most part, the old saying "Children should be seen and not heard" should apply to university students. The vast majority of them come to Kingston to get an education. During their three or four years here, they live in a world of their own, one that is built around academic pursuits and recreational opportunities.

Some might call that world artificial. But that would be unfair. It is simply a world apart, filled with its own expectations, standards and pressures. Somewhere along the line, a set of expectations seems to have been created that could most definitely be considered
artificial. It has to do with that nebulous concept called "town and gown relations." And it now requires students (unfairly in most instances) to insert themselves into the town side of the mix.

Vegas beer pong competition gets (almost) serious

by Kathleen Hennessey, The Associated Press,
Sun News World

LAS VEGAS - Don't let the smell of beer and the rock music fool you: Beer pong is a serious game. Some dare say a sport. Granted, they tend to be grinning and drinking when they say it.

There was plenty of both going on this weekend at the World Series of Beer Pong IV, a loud and sloshy annual tournament that elevates a college fraternity house staple that includes ping pong balls and beer to an (almost) serious competition.
