Family Reunion

The 2010 Allstate Tom Joyner Family Reunion was an inspiring event. I am so glad I responded to the invitation to participate in the expos authors pavillion and look forward to doing so again next year if the opportunity arises. The event turned like a well oiled machine. Participants were treated to seminars, concerts, the expo, for which I participated, and so much more; both on site at the beautiful Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Kissimmee, Florida; and offsite at Universal Studios and partner sites.

I arrived on Thursday, September 2nd and was greeted by a friendly and helpful staff. The expo opened at 7 p.m. and guests arrived eager to visit the 100+ sponsors and exhibitors. We were treated to performances by DJ Cupid, Leela James, and El Debarge who shocked me with a soul stirring performance. That was a trip down memory lane I won't soon forget.

Being positioned next to BET/Centric was a plus. Throughout the event they hosted Political Commentator, Roland Martin; 80's favorites, Kid n Play, Dougie Fresh, and Chubb Rock. In addition, Leela James, Eric Benet, and others ventured through the spot to mingle, take photographs and sign autographs with and for fans.

Greetings!

As always, my prayers are that you and yours are doing well.  The holiday's are fast approaching and if you are like me, you are not ready for them.  So much has transpired since my last email.  The biggest being, a true test of my faith.  September 3rd, was my 46th birthday.  I was in Orlando, signing at the Allstate, Tom Joyner Family Reunion (an awesome event).  I had returned to my hotel, and finally gotten to sleep, when I received a phone call from my youngest daughter.  It was 3:37 a.m. and I thought they were calling to wish me a Happy Birthday.  See, I have this ritual where I call them at the exact time they were born, to wish them a happy birthday.  I am not sure what time I was born, but thought maybe they had called my mom.  As it turns out, my eldest daughter was ill.  The preliminary diagnosis, a Chordoma, which is a skull-based tumor.

For a month, people all over the world prayed with and for us, and God heard our prayers.  Two hours into surgery the surgeon called to let me know it wasn't a tumor and it wasn't cancerous.  Talk aboout happy feelings; the official diagnosis, a Cholesterol Granuloma.  A cyst that had attached itself to the bone surrounding the sinus area.  Her recovery is coming along, and we remain prayerful, and hopeful.

This alone, is enough for us to be thankful as we head into Thanksgiving.

This month I have put together some useful information that I hope you will enjoy.  Thank you to everyone for all the positive feedback, and for forwarding the newsletters on to family, friends, and avid readers.  You are so appreciated.

Much Love,

Tracy

    For Colored Girls, the Movie
For Colored GirlsFor Colored Girls like Beloved was Best Left to the Readers Imagination

Amazing, Brilliant, Inspiring, Magnificent, and Powerful, are the adjectives being used to describe the movie For Colored Girls; Tyler Perry?s adaptation of the 1974 collection of poems by Ntozake Shange originally titled For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/ When the Rainbow is Enuf. I have tried my best to see the sunshine (and the pot of gold) at the end of this dismal rainbow but it has eluded me, thus far. The movie is jammed pack with accomplished actresses and actors. And Perry did a pretty good job himself in bringing the movie to life; but like Oprah Winfrey with Toni Morrison?s, Beloved; at the end of the day, what was captured in the imagination of this reader was somehow lost in translation, in route to the big screen.  Continue reading...
Supporting the Independent Author - Book Clubs and Avid Readers We Need You
Book ClubsYou can make a difference

Many book clubs may feel as if there are only 12 months in a year, so they are limited to supporting only 12 authors.  But nothing can be further from the truth.  There are so many things you can do to shine the spotlight on up and coming new writers.  Below is just a brief list.  After the holidays I will devote a newsletter to this topic alone.

    • In addition to your monthly book selection, showcase a new author.  Request promotional material from authors who contact you but aren't selected as your book of the month; then pass out the materials at your meetings.  Create a spotlight page on your website, or invite a local author to your meetings and allow them to do a 10 minute pitch
    • A few times a year, host a local author's meet~n~greet and invite family, friends, and co-workers.  It can be at a restaurant where each attendee pays for their own meal.  Authors can introduce themselves, do a quick pitch and afterwards sell their books.
    • If you read a book and really enjoy it, post a review on Amazon, Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, etc.  Don't keep the good news to yourself, share it with everyone you know.
    • Books make great gifts.  This holiday season, give books by independent authors instead of those on the bestsellers list.  Chances are, your reader friends already have those anyway.
    • When you are reading a book by an indepdent author, take a picture holding the book and make it your profile picture.  Create a link from Amazon on your Facebook and other social network sites that tell about the book.

There are so many small things you can do to help further someone's dreams.  Just think how empowered you will feel when you can look back and say, "Hey, I supported him or her when they first came on the scene."  We all start somewhere, but without you we can't go far.

I hope you have enjoyed this month's newsletter.  Please forward to family and friends.  Rest assured, email addresses are not captured when you forward emails created using Constant Contact.  As always, feedback is appreciated.

    Sincerely,

    Tracy Darity
