PR Rescue Pack, Coming to the Rescue
Submitted by Amy Nolan, APR Baton Rouge, LA
If you have small children, then you've probably seen your share of the popular Nick Jr. show "Diego." The young boy sets out on adventures to help animals in danger with his "rescue pack," which is a versatile apparatus that converts from a backpack to everything from a boat, to a rope, to a ladder to a hot air balloon.
As public relations professionals, we are the "rescue pack" for our clients or employers. We wear many hats and must be versatile. We must be writers, editors, researchers, Web masters, Tweeters, spokespeople, listeners, advisers, coaches, planners, creators, trainers, organizers, and occasionally even fire fighters.
So what skills are you carrying with you in your rescue pack? Throughout my career, I've worn many hats, from conference planner, to newsletter editor, to fund raiser, to Web master, to corporate trainer, to student media adviser, to press secretary and even cookbook publisher. And each step of my career has helped me to fill my PR rescue pack.
No matter what type of job you're in as a public relations professional, I challenge you to always build your knowledge base and keep filling your rescue pack with skills, knowledge and abilities. You may think you don't need them right now, but you never know where life will take you, and the more you know, the better.
One way to fill your rescue pack and gain a remarkable education is to become accredited through the APR program. I encourage all public relations professionals to seek accreditation. It's one of the best things I've ever done for myself and my career.
So don't waste another minute. Start filling your PR rescue pack so you can come to the rescue. |

SPRF APR Progress and Potential
Submitted by Dr. John E. Forde, APR SPRF Vice President of Accreditation
Dr. John E. Forde, APR
 |
Fellow SPRF Colleagues,
Thank you for the opportunity to represent our membership (along with Missy LaBorde, APR) on the nine-organization Universal Accreditation Board. Together the UAB continues to make great progress on behalf of all of our members on many long-term projects, and we have numerous new initiatives under way. We encourage any current APRs to continue working to build the ranks of new APRs. For those not yet accredited, please consider making the next step toward professionalism by becoming APR. Any of your APR leaders (local, state, regional, or national) will be glad to answer questions or provide advice concerning the specific benefits of the credential or the process in general. For those colleagues in the APR process, please note that Readiness Review opportunities are available at the upcoming PRAM Conference in Natchez on April 8-9 and at the SPRF Conference on September 26-28 in Baton Rouge. Conference representatives are working with various APR chairs to coordinate these confidential sessions. (Act very quickly to contact your respective APR representatives if you plan to sit for your Readiness Review in Natchez.) We also have typically planned APR information sessions at state and regional conferences. Please let us know of any specific suggestions concerning these programs. Over the years we have found these to be very instrumental in building momentum toward members committing to APR pursuits. In SPRF we currently have well over 100 APRs, which ranks our regional organization of about 1,400 as one of the top three organizations in the country considering total APRs. However, since we have grown so much over recent years we now have many relatively new member colleagues who are prime candidates for APR. I strongly believe it helps all of us and the professional as a whole when more are accredited. Please also remember that April is APR month. Local chapters and others are urged to strongly promote "APR in APR" this year and every year. I will be forwarding an e-mail to APR leaders in the next few days with many specific suggestions for them to implement, but here are just a few ideas. . .
---Hold a mixer where current APRs can encourage those considering becoming accredited.
---Have your monthly meeting speaker focus on APR.
---Start a study group with those considering taking the APR plunge.
---Set local chapter APR goals for 2010.
---Promote APR in your newsletter, on your website, and in e-mail notices.
---Consider expanding APR Scholarships. Some SPRF units already provide these to support their candidates.
---Celebrate the success of your colleagues when they reach their APR goals!
---Promote your APR successes through traditional and "new" media.
Please refer to www.praccreditation.org to learn more about the process and to hear from others on why they became accredited. (This site also provides access to the Short Bookshelf of Recommended Texts, the APR Study Guide, the APR Online Study Course, and many other constantly evolving resources.) There are now dozens of pages on this site that provide great detail into all aspects of APR. The UAB will meet next in April in New York. Feel free to contact Missy or me at any time if we can help you or if you have any topics that we should discuss with all UAB member organization representatives. Have a great spring! John

PRCA's Kristina Hendrix Earns APR
Kristina L. Hendrix, APR, Director of Technical Outreach for Space Science Solutions, Inc. for NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, recently earned the Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) designation. She joins seven other members of the North Alabama Chapter of the Public Relations Council of Alabama (PRCA) who are Accredited.
"We are very excited to add Kristina to the select list of North Alabama Chapter members who have achieved accreditation," said Melissa Bullard, APR, Accreditation Chair for the North Alabama Chapter of PRCA. "She is a talented professional and has worked diligently for several months to earn her APR. I know this will be an important milestone in her career."
To earn the APR credential, Hendrix completed a comprehensive program that included a presentation and portfolio review before a panel of three Accredited public relations professionals and a computer-based Examination-both assessing the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) required to practice public relations effectively in today's business arena. Just under 70 percent of those professionals pursuing the designation successfully earn their APR.
APR, administered nationally by the Universal Accreditation Board, is a mark of distinction for public relations professionals who demonstrate their commitment to the profession and to its ethical practice. The designation is earned based on broad knowledge, strategic perspective and sound professional judgment. Within the four-state Southern Public Relations Federation, 111 members are Accredited, including the 43 Accredited professionals in PRCA.
Hendrix has been in her current position as NASA for one year. Previously, she served as ASRI for NASA Marshall Space Flight Center as an Outreach Coordinator from September 2006 to April 2009. Before that, Hendrix was the Marketing Communications Specialist at MAX, Your Community Credit Union from January 2004-April 2006 and transitioned to Business Development Officer from April 2006-September 2006. She is the 2010 Secretary of the North Alabama Chapter of PRCA.
