Greetings!
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
I'm generally a happy enough guy, but I'm also a fan of about any kind of satire. Some of my favorites are the demotivational posters featured at despair.com, the ones that poke fun at the posters you see in HR classrooms. My particular favorite is the one here called "Procrastination" that includes a cutout for a photo - but it's blank - with the cutline, "I'll find a picture for it later."
If there's anything all of us PR types have in common it's that we work best with a deadline, right? Well your deadline is July 31 when it comes to registering for this year's SPRF conference to be held Oct. 4-6 in Tunica, Miss.
Register before the end of the month and you will receive the Early Bird Full Conference discount of $225, a savings of $50 off the full conference fee of $275. And for the first time we are pleased to offer special pricing for our Senior Leadership Council (aka "The Grovers") of $175. It is our hope this new pricing format brings back some of our more seasoned vets to regular conference participation. The Student Registration is a deal at $150. The Full Conference Registration for all includes two luncheons and two dinners, including the Awards of Professional Excellence Luncheon and the Lanterns Awards Dinner.
This year's schedule is jam-packed from the SPRF Board meeting, APR Preparation Workshop, APR Recognition Reception and Welcome Reception at the Red Door Nightclub on Sunday, Oct. 4 to the Opening Session, Breakout sessions, Luncheon with SPRF Business Meeting and 2010 Conference Preview, Senior Leadership Council Reception and Keynote Speaker & Dinner on Monday, Oct. 5. The final day will include a General Session, Break Out Sessions, Awards of Professional Excellence Luncheon and the grand finale, the Lantern Awards Dinner.
There are, of course, ample Readiness Review opportunities and endless possibilities for personal networking and just plain fun.
It was just two years ago when we set a conference attendance record in Mobile with more than 225 participants. I hope we match or exceed that this year. Record or not, however, I can promise that the board and its committees have been working diligently to make this year's event the best ever. I look forward to seeing you in Tunica!
Best regards, Adam Kelley, APR |

Chapter of Distinction Search for the Best is On
The Southern Public Relations Federation (SPRF) wishes to promote continuous improvement in the function, outreach, and benefits to members and communities stemming from the activities of our 20 member chapters.
To do so, at the annual conference, SPRF will monetarily honor its top overall chapter as measured in the areas of programs (educational value); membership recruitment, retention and participation; promotion of public relations internally and externally; projects; community involvement and other special events; and accreditation and professional development. By design, this annual competition will cause member organizations to evaluate yearly its own activities as well as plan ahead to make measurable progress in these areas. With all chapters striving to be the best, our collective impact to members and to communities will grow accordingly.
The Chapter of Distinction team is Sabrina McLaughlin, APR, ECPRO; Joy Carter, APR, PRCA; Kristie Aylett, APR, PRAM; Jennifer Jenkins, APR, PRCA; and Glen Duncan, APR, PRAL.
"The idea was to find a way to encourage every chapter and every chapter president to seriously consider how to improve, how to be a great chapter, how to make an impact on our profession, our communities and our colleagues," Duncan said.
"In order to consider an entire year's work, the submissions will always consist of the prior year," Duncan said, "So our first tip is for current presidents to assign the task of applying to their immediate past president, because that's who will get recognized. Then current presidents should volunteer to head the assignment up next year, so they can win."
Award narratives must be received via e-mail, and entries and entry fees must be postmarked by August 28, 2009. Questions concerning the 2008 Chapter Achievement and Chapter of the Year Competition should be directed to Joy Carter at (205) 325-4735. For more information and specific award details go to http://sprf.org/awards/chapter-of-distinction/ |

Accreditation News
Submitted by Dr. John E. Forde, APR SPRF Vice President of Accreditation
Fellow SPRF Members, We're excited about the continuing progress of our Accredited in Public Relations program in SPRF. The interest in APR seems to be constantly growing, with many local chapters forming study groups and other individuals pursuing the credential with support from distant colleagues. (With all of the study availabilities now, the best strategy is probably to combine studying with local colleagues and also to network with public relations professionals throughout the country.) SPRF continues to be one of the top three public relations organizations in the country with numbers of members accredited, but we always want more! The Universal Accreditation Board (consisting of nine member organizations) is working continuously through various committees to enhance the value of APR. We have been striving to upgrade the online study course with a variety of learning modules and interactive activities designed to make studying more productive. Recent data from the online course administrator indicate that 100% of the most recent online course candidates who participated in 75% or more of the online course materials passed the APR examination. Another committee is working on marketing APR more effectively to CEOs and others outside of public relations so they will understand the nature of the achievement (and not that it stands for Annual Percentage Rate). We are also suggesting strongly that organizations designate APR-preferred or a similar statement on open positions. An additional major focus of the UAB is to link more effectively all of our nine participating organizations. This is being accomplished through telephone forums and increased e-mail and other communication. We have been implementing APR workshops (also called jumpstarts or boot camps) prior to some state conferences to increase interest, as well as providing APR-focused sessions during conferences. Readiness Review sessions are available October 4-6 at the SPRF Annual Conference in Tunica, Mississippi. Contact your local or state accreditation chair to organize these for you. This is a great time to conduct these since dozens of APRs are typically in one place. Remember that these are confidential, as is the entire APR process, unless you choose to tell everyone (as many of us like to do to add more incentive). The UAB will meet by conference call in July, in New York in September, and in San Diego in November at the PRSA International Conference. We are there to represent you and want your input. Please go to www.praccreditation.org for a continually growing body of knowledge concerning APR. Almost anything anyone would need to know about APR can be found there. As always, feel free to call me at 662-325-8033(office), 662-324-0168(home), or 662-312-5031(cell), or e-mail me at jforde@comm.msstate.edu. In addition, any APR professional I know will be happy to talk with individuals or speak for chapters. Sometimes a personal visit makes a great difference! |

SPRF CONFERENCE 2009
____________________
Conference Promises Great ROI
Are you at a crossroads, trying to decide where to spend your limited professional development budget for this year? Look no further than the SPRF Annual Conference, which will be held in Tunica, October 4-6, 2009. With a $225 Early Bird Full Conference Registration Fee and a $69 room rate at the five-star Gold Strike Casino Hotel, it is the most cost effective way to build your communications skills and learn how to get an even better return on investment for your efforts. Like never before, the public relations profession is at a crossroads. While many see us as the "feel-good" people of our organizations, others still view us as the "spin doctors" of the last millennium. Are we strictly information providers, image makers, marketing, advertising or a cross-section of all of the above? Technology has also brought us to a crossroads, where the media gatekeepers of the past give way to the tweeters of today and we can only imagine where the technology of tomorrow will take us. In addition, this SPRF Conference gives us greater opportunities than ever before to recognize excellence, both individually and collectively. With the Lantern Awards, we will recognize excellence in our communication efforts, both as individuals and as members of a team. The Senior Practitioner designation, Educator of the Year Award and the Professional Achievement Award, the highest SPRF individual honor, recognize achievement of an individual over his or her career. For the first time, we will recognize the work of our chapters and chapter leaders through the Chapter of Distinction Awards, which will include Chapter of the Year and a President of the Year. There are several networking opportunities, including a reception for the Senior Leadership Council, the APR Reception for all APR members and SPRF Board Members, and the Welcome Reception at the Red Door Nightclub at Gold Strike for all conference participants. In addition, both lunch and dinner are included in the registration fee on both Monday and Tuesday, so you will have very few additional meal charges to turn in on your expense report! Register today at www.sprf.org and join us at the crossroads of Delta Blues and Mississippi Hospitality for a great time, rocking with dynamic speakers, interesting sessions, and terrific networking opportunities. |

PRAM Golden Triangle Member Honored by Mississippi Business Journal as Top 40 Under 40
Karen Stanley, Sales and Marketing Director for Triangle Maintenance Service, LLC "When Karen first interviewed for this position, she said something that rings true today," said John Bean, CEO of the Eat With Us Group and Sweet Peppers Franchise Systems. "Karen let me know she was looking to work with a company that believes in giving back to the communities where they live and work."
Stanley moved to Columbus 12 years ago and immediately began to throw herself into the community, putting together everything from ground breakings to ribbon cuttings for the Columbus Lowndes Development LINK and staying busy with the Columbus Convention &Visitor's Bureau, the Greater Starkville Development Partnership and Tupelo's Community Development Foundation.
Stanley had lived in three states (Texas, Louisiana and Alabama) by the time she was in the fifth grade, so it is little wonder that she has enjoyed settling down in the vibrant North Mississippi community. Stanley's zest for activity began at her Mobile, Ala. high school where was active in the Pep Club and the Student Government Association.
"No matter how bad our football team lost I continued to spread the BakerHigh School spirit," Stanley said. "Staying positive is a trait that I have carried with me my entire life."
Stanley studied organizational communications at the University of South Alabama and business administration at the Mississippi University for Women. Her career in marketing kicked off at Gayfers Department stores in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Mobile where she organizing store events and fell in love and married one of the store's internal security officers.
"Our wedding practically shut down the store," Stanley said.
Her success in marketing continues today at Eat With Us where Stanley manages five different restaurant concepts (a total of 22 eateries including 10 Sweet Peppers across the Southeast). As marketing director, she has helped redesign and launch two web sites as well as the first branded marketing campaign for the Sweet Peppers restaurant concept. She has also overseen large growth periods in the company, and designed, planned and hosted two annual conferences for the franchise.
When Stanley is not generating fresh new ideas and goals for Eat With Us, she enjoys shopping, reading fashion and parenting magazines and watching sons Aiden and Logan and playing with dogs Molly and Trixie. Sometimes she even finds time to attempt a well-deserved nap.
"My husband is a rock of support for me," Stanley said. "He alternates between the roles of toughest critic and strongest supporter and is quick to keep me grounded and remind me of the important things in life. He believes in me more than I believe in myself."
Stanley calls herself an anomaly in today's society as so few people major in and then work in the careers they thought they would in college.
"In moving to Columbus I could not imagine I would find the type of opportunities and companies I have been able to work with since I have lived in this area," she said.

PRCA June-July President's Letter
Dear Members, I sincerely thank everyone that attended the State Luncheon in April. What a magical sight it was to see more than 200 public relations and communications professionals come together from all corners of the state to learn more about our industry.
If you were not able to attend, you really missed a memorable event. Beginning with the luncheon, then the awards ceremony and concluding with the seminars - everything was outstanding!
The luncheon speaker, Corey Ealons, Director of African American Media and Special Projects for President Obama's Administration, was thought-provoking. What made his appearance even more special is that he is one of us - a Public Relations practitioner from the State of Alabama.
The seminars were not only educational, but also motivational. Attendees walked away with tools to help them both professionally and personally.
The awards ceremony was exceptional. Thanks to Kay Yarbrough, APR, vice president of Projects, and Nia Johnson, vice president of Students, for coordinating the Chapter and Student Awards. Congratulations to all of the individual and chapter winners. Special accolades to the Mobile Chapter for being named the PRCA Chapter of the Year; Vanessa Murphree, Ph. D, for being recognized as the PRCA State Educator of the Year; and Heather Chance, the Student of the Year.
Special thanks to Brandon Wilson, vice president of Programs, and Josh Till, president of the Birmingham Chapter for coordinating and hosting the luncheon. The Birmingham Chapter laid out the red carpet and really made us feel welcome. I sincerely appreciate ALL of the luncheon committee members' hard work in making our first State Luncheon a success.
I'm looking forward to the 2010 State Conference, which will be hosted by the East Alabama Chapter. Based on their exciting pre-conference presentation, we are in for real "Old School" treat in Auburn!
As we make plans for the second half of 2009, I encourage you to attend the Southern Public Relations Federation (SPRF) Conference to be held in Tunica, Mississippi, October 4-6. Each chapter will have an opportunity to compete on a regional level, and several of our members will be recognized as Senior Practitioners. Vanessa Murphree will compete for the SPRF Educator of the Year; and Bill Cunningham (of the Montgomery Chapter), our 2008 Professional Achievement Award (PAA), recipient will compete for the 2009 SPRF PAA. This conference offers numerous professional development opportunities, so you will not want to miss it.
Although this year has been challenging for many of us because of the economy, I believe it is quickly becoming a year to reinvent ourselves and our profession. That's why I applaud you for attending the State Luncheon and I urge you to attend the upcoming the SPRF Conference.
Have a safe and fulfilling summer, Nan Baldwin, APR |
