Greetings!
I hope you and your family have had a fun-filled summer! Most of you would agree that August is "Back to School" month. This issue of In Focus discusses the importance of routine eye care for children. I also discuss the importance of ultraviolet protection for the health of your eyes.

| August is National Children's Vision and Learning Month |
Studies show that up to 80% of the learning a child does is through their eyes. A recent survey by Prevent Blindness America reveals that one in five 12 to 17 year-olds have difficulty seeing in the classroom. More than one in four students complain of headaches. These complaints are noted even though 45% of the children in this age group wear prescription eyewear. This survey shows why regular eye exams are so important as children progress through school.
The same survey reports that 66% of children under the age of 6 have never had a professional eye examination. In the 6-11 age group, only one in four wear prescription eyeglasses. It is known that undiagnosed vision disorders can lead to amblyopia (a permanent decrease in best corrected vision) which afffects a childs ability to learn.
Target Optical is pleased to offer polycarbonate lenses with anti-reflective coating for just $25.00 to all children up to age 17 with a frame purchase.

| Protect Eyes Against UV Rays |
A good pair of sunglasses can protect our eyes from damaging ultraviolet radiation. Experts say excessive exposure to UVA and UVB rays can contribute to the development of cataracts, a leading cause of vision loss.
Consumers buying sunglasses should look for a sticker that indicates they have a UV coating. Polycarbonate lenses are also an excellent choice for UV protection as they block 99% of UVA and UVB. Polarized lenses are a great choice for fishing and boating because they reflect glare from the water.
Don't be fooled. Dark lenses alone don't block all the UV radiation. You may think your shades look cool, but make sure they offer the protection your eyes deserve.
Children need sunglasses too! Remember, long-term UV exposure contributes to cataracts. Sunglasses for kids are cool, fun and essential!
