After almost 40 years of serving South Shore children and families we have outgrown our name! The Board of Directors of South Shore Day Care will celebrate the organization's 40th anniversary in September 2010 with a name change and new website. Thanks to the pro bono services of the strategic marketing firm of Devine & Pearson, and trademark attorneys at Burns & Levinson, the Board will proceed with a new name, logo and brand. | Playground Redesign Initiative:
Imagine-Plan-Build |
|
 |
Sunflower houses, butterfly gardens, tricycle paths, embankment slides and shaded areas for art projects and picnics were some of the ideas Keith & Diane Miller of Miller Design LLC gathered from Weymouth Preschool students and teachers to incorporate in the redesign of their playground. The Preschool and Kindergarten students at WPS learned about the job of the architect and the importance of their role in the "Imagine and Plan" phase of the playground initiative. The goal of the playground project is to provide a functional outdoor classroom that complements the High Scope approach practiced in the preschool. SSDCS received a grant for playground planning from the Department of Early Education and Care's "Invest in Children" License Plate Fund. The Miller's will design new playground spaces for our Weymouth and Quincy Preschool centers.

Quirkles Science & Literacy Curriculum fun at
Atlantic Afterschool
K-1 Group leader Lindsey Meyers with her young scientists
Susie Sound, Watery William, Botanist Bert, and Density Dan are some of the characters used to introduce science stories and hands-on experiments to Kindergarten and 1st grade students at our Atlantic Afterschool site in Quincy. Since January, Lindsey has used the Quirkles curriculum, provided through the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley's Math, Science and Technology initiative (MSTi), to introduce and reinforce language and science concepts with special visitors like Friction Fred and Colorful Caroline. According to Center Director Peggy Kelly, the curriculum has created a buzz in the classroom and the older kids anxiously await their chance to try the experiments. The mission of the MSTi is to increase awareness of math, science and technology-related career options among young people with the goal of building a long-term pipeline of qualified workers to support the continued growth and prosperity of the Massachusetts economy.

Grandparent / Kinship Support Group honors family memories with scrapbooking activity
Grandmother Donna Feetham (pictured below left) and Great Aunt Gail McLaughlin (below right) created family memory books at a recent gathering of the Grandparent/Kinship Support Group. The group is facilitated by SSDCS social worker Bobbie London, M.Ed. LMFT and meets quarterly to share stories and address issues that arise when family members become the guardians or primary caretakers of a relative's child.

According to London, "When grandparents or other relatives raise children, it is for various reasons. It may be because there was the death of a parent or a parent is away in the military; it may be because a child was having problems with his/her social environment and needed a change, but more often than not, there is a correlation between alcohol and drug abuse and neglect on the part of the birth parents. Our group provides a supportive environment for these families to share stories and strategies and support each other."
More than six million children - approximately 1 in 12 - are living in households headed by grandparents (4.5 million children) or other relatives (1.5 million children). South Shore Day Care currently has 35 children whose primary guardians are family members other than the birth parents.
For more information on Grandparent/Kinship Support contact Bobbie London at (781) 331-8505 x239.
