Late Summer 2010 | |
|
Greetings!
The summer has been quiet with all the record setting heat. My work quietly grows. Belvedere Integrated Healing Arts is building an outdoor waiting room! We have several mosaics planned for the outdoor space. Don't forget about my new Doula Package (2 prenatal massages, 1 baby treatment, and 1 postpartum massage) for $200. This summer I completed a recertification of prenatal massage and purchased a new sidelying system for pregnant moms so they feel more supported on their side when I am working on them. I also supported the introductory workshop for Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy by assisting Michael Shea, instructor of craniosacral therapy for many years and completed the introductory level for Somatic Experiencing.
I am a member of the Perinatal Collaboration, a group of professionals that work with families preconception through birth and the postpartum period. We have joined forces with the Improved Pregnancy Outcomes group from the city to jointly work on an event next year that will bring attention to quality maternity/gynecological care, better birth, happier babies, and support during the postpartum period. This two day event will feature an educational day with continuing education for professionals and a vendor day so that medical consumers (patients and clients) can visit providers who have information tables. The City has offered a space near the downtown Mall. Dates are still being set.

Stories from the Field Plagiocephaly in Babies
I have been seeing a lot of babies with positional plagiocephaly or flattened head. The patterns I have seen are mostly connected with torticollis, or twisted neck. The cranium of your baby develops a flat side and keeps her head turned to one side. The cranium is growing quickly, and because of the fascial strain, the head grows at an angle. This can cause pain and misalignment of the cranial bones. It can also cause nursing difficulties. Pediatricians will need to rule out craniosynosostis, or plagiocephaly due to premature fusion of the sutures. Craniosacral therapy for little ones combined with exercises, tummy time, and repositioning can really help. |

Research Review Prenatal Bonding
Communication with the
Baby: Prenatal Communication, also called prenatal stimulation is a
process that encourages learning in unborn babies optimizing mental and sensory
development. It is based on the award
winning research of Dr. Beatriz Manrique and Dr. Rene Van de Carr. Both of these researchers have created
techniques that allow you to communicate with your unborn child, and have an
effect on their emotional and cognitive development. The research is pretty convincing. Stimulated babies tested at the age of 3 scored
on average 14 IQ points higher on the Stanford-Binet scale than children who
were not stimulated. On average, stimulated infants consistently scored higher
than the non-stimulated control group on the Brazelton scale for neurological
development and behavior, and the Bayley scale for mental and motor
development. Dr. Manrique's
work research developed into a project called Project Family. You can see more about her and the research
on a website called Make Way for Baby, a video education program developed from
her work.
Research by Dr. Rene Van de Carr at his Prenatal
University Program in California revealed that
exhibit enhanced visual, auditory,
linguistic, and motor development. In general, they sleep better, are more
alert, confident, and content than infants who were not stimulated. More
intense bonding and greater family cohesion. Still a third researcher, Hungarian Jeno Raffai, found that extensive communication and visualization with and of the unborn baby can have extensive benefits. His carefully documented research of 1200 families showed that:
- The mother's inner perceptions are well attuned to her pregnancy and the unborn.
- She feels greater assertiveness and security during childbirth.
- Mother and baby become a good team and experience less anxiety and pain.
-
There is less effort in giving birth and less complications.
-
The need for obstetrical interventions goes down significantly.
- Caesarean sections are decreased to about 6%, as compared to the norm of 30% and more.
-
Premature birth rates were less than 0.2 percent as compared to an average of more than 8%.
-
Birth trauma is of low degree as indicated by natural, round shaped heads and little crying after birth (mostly less than 20 minutes per day).
And much more. For more information see the website for Gerhard Schroth, M.D.
