When the Library Lights Go Out  A Stuffed Animal Sleepover

Bring your stuffed friend to a special pajama storytime that promotes the basic Early Literacy practices of Reading, Singing and Talking. After the storytime, leave your special friend for a sleepover at the library. Pick it up the next day along with a photo to see what fun it had while the library was closed!

Diddle Diddle Dumpling

Diddle, diddle dumpling, my son, John

Went to bed with his trousers on.

One shoe off and one shoe on.

Directions: Baby can lay on back on the floor. While saying the rhyme bicycle baby's legs. This is a great changing table rhyme. It is also great if baby has an upset tummy from too much gas.

Eye Contact: One of the primary factors in developing baby's strong emotional foundation is the connection between adult and baby. Making eye contact with baby is an important facet of this connection.

Greetings!

The Kent District Library is here to provide you and your child with the skills needed to succeed in school and in life. KDL's Early Lit Bits newsletter is full of FUN and simple activities that will help foster that growth.  For more information regarding the skills your child needs before he or she learns to read, visit the Play-Grow-Read section of the KDL website.  You can also stop by any KDL branch in order to speak with one of our helpful youth librarians. We hope to see you soon!

Learning with Crafts
Play-Grow-Read

Doing a simple craft with your child can enable you to open a conversation about starting school and help ease the transition.

Try making a book that describes the school day routine.  This could help with any fears that might arise and build excitement.

To begin the book you can take pictures, use coloring pages, or draw pictures of different parts of the day, like eating breakfast, brushing teeth, getting in the car, arriving at school, etc.  Next, take the different pictures and attach them to pieces of paper.  Have your child help you put them in the correct order and then staple them into a book form.  You can write words to describe the pictures if you prefer or let your child narrate the book themselves when they read it.   Don't forget to give your book a title and author!  Now you have a book to read about your child's day that can also build on narrative skills by encouraging reading and writing with your child.

Five Little Monkeys Reading in Bed by Eileen Christelow

Eileen Christelow has written many books with the five little monkeys as main characters.  Her newest addition, Five Little Monkeys Reading in Bed, will warm hearts anew.  Mama has read to her monkeys and now she is ready for them to settle down and go to sleep.  The little monkeys want one more story!  Finally, Mama is forced to take the books with her.  Just as the monkeys are nodding off...what do they hear?   Does Mama like to read in bed too?  The vibrant illustrations and rhyming text make for a great read aloud.  It is important for children to see  reading as a fun activity. This will help them develop Print MotivationMaking books part of a bedtime routine helps to accomplish this skill.  There is nothing better than reading in bed with your little monkey.

KDLville Early Literacy Play Spaces

The Caledonia Township Library opened their new 18,000 square foot building last February with a KDLville early literacy play space.  With a tree stump entrance into the area, interactive end panels, and fun crafts at the art cart as permanent fixtures, the space has been a big hit in the community. Some favorites from the rotating toys have included a kitchen, a car ramp, a doll house, and magnetic gears. The writing center includes monthly activities to help children get ready to write. Be sure to stop in soon and check out the latest addition that is sure to be a hit: the new grocery shelf and shopping cart!
