| Snow Parties | |
Join us for some winter time fun with snow-themed crafts and games. Develop narrative skills in your child by helping them tell a story about snow and illustrating it with stamps, or make your own mitten-shaped book; increase their print motivation with activities that connect to books, such as making glittery snowflakes and dressing dolls or animals just like Froggy Gets Dressed. Play with alliteration and build their phonological awareness: how many winter words start with the same sound? (snowman, shoe, skate, slippery, etc.)
Most importantly, have fun with your child and help them build a positive attitude towards books and reading!

Clap Tap Bend
I take my little hands
And go clap, clap, clap
Clap, clap, clap
Clap, clap, clap
I take my little hands
And go clap, clap, clap
Clap, clap all day long
Directions: Baby can be sitting, standing or on their back. Let them clap their hands as you sing or help them clap their hands if they are younger. Other verses you might want to try include feet-tapping and legs-bending.
Rhythm may be experienced in many ways; dancing to a tune, playing kitchen pots and pans, tapping toes, listening to music, and on and on. Baby can experience and enjoy rhythm just as you can. Although baby may not be able to clap his hands independently for a year or more, he can, with your help, enjoy clapping activities.

| Learning with Crafts |

If you are stuck inside because of the snow, there are still many fun ways to keep you and your children happy and occupied. Try reading a couple of great winter related books like "Snowmen at Night" by Caralyn Buehner or "The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats and follow up with a winter themed craft.
One easy and fun craft is the colorful coffee filter snowflake. For this craft you need coffee filters (round works best), markers, newspaper, scissors and water. Let your child color the coffee filter however they want and when they are finished, lay it on a piece of newspaper. Try putting away the dark markers for less "muddy" results. Next, work together to spray, flick or squeeze water onto the colored filter. Take time to talk about the colors and what happens when they mix together. Talking about the colors and describing what happens when they mix will help build vocabulary skills. After the filter is dry, fold it multiple times and then let your child cut out shapes from the paper. Practicing with scissors helps build fine motor skills and hand strength to aid in pre-writing skills. Unfold the paper to reveal the snowflake. You can hang it in a window for a colorful winter decoration.

Snowmen All Year by Caralyn Buehner
Presenting another great winter themed book from Caralyn Buehner!
Snowmen All Year is her third installment in her bestselling Snowmen series. In this title, a young boy dreams of spending an entire year with his snowman. From watching fireworks to learning how to swim, the two friends celebrate numerous highlights of the different seasons. Mark Buehner, the illustrator, does a wonderful job of exuding a sense of fun and joy in each scene. The rhyming text is simple and makes for a great read-a-loud. Exposing your child to rhyming words is a great way to encourage the early literacy skills of phonological awareness and vocabulary. Beware, repeat readings will be called for!
