I Spy is a great way to work on beginning letter sounds. This is an essential skill for children to have to be ready to read.

Say: "I spy with my little eye, something that starts with _______"

Make the beginning sound of the word you have chosen and encourage your child to guess. As your child begins to learn more and more letter sounds you can each take turns spying around the house, at the grocery store, at a restaurant or at the library. This is a great game to play while you are waiting in line.
FREE Workshops for Parents and Caregivers

Are you interested in finding out even more about your child's development?  Attend up for one of our FREE Early Childhood Essentials classes.  Throughout the fall, KDL will be hosting workshops led by experts in a wide variety of child development topics.  Find out about nutrition, brain and language development, early literacy, and more!

We're even offering a full-day workshop, our annual Day of Learning.  This will take place at the Plainfield Township Branch on Saturday, October 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Snacks will be provided, but lunch will be on your own.

These classes are for adults only, and childcare will not be provided.  Registration is required and participation is limited.  Classes are occurring at various branches throughout the fall, so check our online calendar of events or call 784-2016 to find out about classes near you!

Greetings!

The Kent District Library wants to help get your child ready to read and write!  In this newsletter, you will find FUN and simple activities to do with your child that will help meet that goal.  For more information on the skills your child needs before he or she learns to read, visit the Play-Grow-Read section of the KDL website.  You can also stop by any KDL branch--our youth librarians would love to share their knowledge with you!

Back to School Egg Carton Craft
September is an exciting month as older siblings head back to school! You can celebrate with the younger siblings by making a school bus together. Cut an egg carton in half and let your child paint or use crayons to color one half yellow. Cut some holes along the middle of the "bus" for windows. Have your child draw kids' faces on scraps of paper, or cut pictures of kids from old magazines, or use old photos of your own children to tape inside of the windows. Glue on some wheels made out of black construction paper or old milk jug tops.  Write "SCHOOL" across the bus and have your child trace the letters. Name each letter as you write together and you are building your child's letter knowledge!
Music Madness!
Freegal is a new free service offered to Kent District Library cardholders. Each week, you can download up to 3 songs from Sony's massive music catalog. These downloads are in mp3 format and are absolutely free to you!

The children's music selection is quite extensive and includes albums from favorites such as Dora the Explorer, Alvin and the Chipmunks and The Backyardigans.

Other noteworthy children's music offerings include Dan Zanes, Laurie Berkner and Tom Chapin plus many, many more.

Download some new tunes to listen to during car trips, exercise or playtimes with your child today!
Quick Bits...

This article is intended to help you capture golden opportunities even if you only have a few minutes to share an early literacy concept with your child.

Life is full of opportunities to enrich your child's life while also having fun.  Even a quick trip in the car can easily give your child a chance to learn and grow.  Pick a color car to count, look at signs and bulletin boards, read license plates for letter knowledge, sing songs or say a rhyme.  With these simple activities you are helping your child get ready to read.

Check out KDL's Play-Grow-Read website for a great list of quick, fun and simple Activities to do Around the House.

Try this song next time you are in the car:

Drive, Drive, Drive
(Sung to: "Row, Row, Row Your Boat"
)

 Drive, drive, drive your car,
 All around the town.
 Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
 Up the hills and down.

 Turn, turn, turn the key,
 Make the engine roar,
 Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
 Let's go to the store.
