Make a Splash with KDL's Summer Reading Club!

splashStarting June 14, stop by any KDL branch location to sign up for a summer of fun at KDL. This year we encourage you to Make a Splash @ your library with activities, contests and more during KDL's Summer Reading Club. Studies show that active learning, such as reading, throughout the summer can help students succeed when they return to school.

This year's participants will also have a chance to win fantastic prizes like gift certificates, annual zoo memberships, and even a trip for four to New York City, courtesy of Walt Disney World. KDL's Summer Reading Club program is available for kids entering grade 5 and under and teens grade 6-12.

Sign up at any KDL branch starting June 14.
Budget Cuts Impact Library Delivery

Starting June 28, in an effort to combat onging budget cuts, the Kent District Library, along with other Lakeland Library Cooperative (LLC) members will institute a new policy regarding library holds. Based on this new policy:
  • Non-KDL cardholders will no longer be able to place holds on non-print items (i.e. DVDs and CDs) owned by KDL, and KDL patrons will no longer be able to place holds on other LLC library non-print items.
  • New books will not be available for holds by non-KDL cardholders until six months after the book was purchased and KDL cardholders will not be able to place holds on new books owned by other LLC libraries.
  • Holds placed after June 28, 2010 will be available for pick up only at a patron's home library location.
With these changes, our aim is to reduce the costs associated with transportation of library items while continuing to allocate resources to those areas our library users have identified as most important. For additional policy details, please read this blog post.

The KDL Fund: Leaving a Legacy

Thanks to the generosity of donors to the KDL Fund, exciting things are happening for young children and their families. Since its inception in late 2007, the KDL Annual Fund has invested over $49,000 in KDL's literacy programs for young children.

Your generous donations have allowed KDL to purchase a number of early literacy tools and resources including Early Literacy Computer Stations, a stand-alone computer system containing over 40 educational software programs in English and Spanish, as well as 1,500 Play, Grow, Read educational packets given to first-time parents. Your donations have also helped to fund new Imagination Stations for our branches, which foster a child's imagination through dramatic play.
