Hello Fans,
I don't know about you, but I will hate to see the summer end. I love the extra down time I give myself when my kids are out of school. We sleep in almost every day and stay up late every night playing games or watching movies; and yes, my work gets done too.
This past month I did a group tour of IKEA's newly renovated Marketplace introducing the new layout and new products; over 50 registered. Keep reading future issues of our newsletter or visit our website to find out about exciting classes and workshops on various organizing topics.
On August 25-26, Get Organized! will host a booth at VISIONS: The Women's Expo 2012 at Dallas Market Hall. I will be on the Culinary Stage at 3:30 p.m. Saturday sharing tips for organizing the kitchen and pantry, meal planning, and how to get the family talking around the dinner table. Visit the website to get more information on this premier women's expo, and meet me at our booth.
As summer comes to an end, church and school groups are finalizing program plans for the coming year. If your group wants a specific presentation, needs a breakout speaker, or is looking for an all day workshop, contact me through the Get Organized! website. My topics are varied and range from organizing your car or home, balancing life and work through organization, business workflow, and life coaching through time or family management. Groups or individuals can also host Organizing Home Parties for hands on organizing advice while enjoying good food and great friends.
Enjoy!

Tips for Staying Organized!
1. Everything in its place: Where to start? Find something that doesn't have a home and assign it one. Think about where you use it, when you need it, and how often you look for it. Put a label on the new home if necessary. If you put it back in its home each time you use it, you will never lose it!
2. Create routines: Think about your lifestyle. Cleaning, exercising, managing finances, doing homework, keeping up with laundry, running errands, and scheduling appointments. Pick a few of the above items and determine when you will realistically do them. Put it on your calendar and keep your calendar out where you can see it. Look at it everyday. It works!
3. lean as you go: You will be surprised at how tidy your house will stay if you clean up each time you finish a project. Done with the meal? Do the dishes as soon as you get up from the table. Finished getting ready in the morning? Wipe down the bathroom counter. Keep the cleaning products under the bathroom sink with extra rags to make the job quick and easy. Just had a spill in the kitchen? Grab the spray and a wet paper towel and wipe up the floor when it happens. A more thorough mopping can be completed later!
4. Put it away now: An organized home creates a place for every item. To stay organized, when you are finished using something, put it back in its home. If you do it right away, your home will not become filled with piles to clear later or unwanted clutter. This concept will also save you time and energy since the item will be handled only once, instead of multiple times as you move it from place to place.
5. Process the mail: Ever wonder why we get so much mail and what to do with it all? Go directly to the trash/recycle can when you bring in your mail. Sort the mail immediately: bills, filing, recycle, trash, shred, and one for each member of the house. Once sorting is done, deposit it where it belongs. Have an inbox for each member of the family and empty it daily or weekly. Make sure you have a designated place for incoming bills. Schedule time to do bill paying and file the paperwork once this is done. If you follow this tip, paper clutter becomes a thing of the past!
6. Create a landing strip: Designate a place by the door where often used items or temporary projects are kept. It can be a counter, baskets, or shelves. Each member of the family has a designated spot for their items such as purses, backpacks, keys, etc. As you come and go you can locate your items quickly. Mom can check backpacks for items from the teachers more efficiently also! This also works well for items that need to be returned/delivered to stores or people when coming and going from the house. A separate basket can be designated for these return items.
7. Make your systems usable: If your organizing system is not working, it may be that it is too difficult, in the wrong place, or not useable for you. Evaluate the reason the system is not working and alter it accordingly. Sometimes if it is new/colorful it can be more fun and also practical for the whole family!
8. Start small: Pick an area of the house that needs organizing such as a closet, desk, room, counter, etc. Find a new organizing tool that works for the space. Organize the space using the new tool and make using it a new habit. Before you know it, that space is always organized and usable. This can be a fun project for the whole family. Try to include the kids and their ideas, and you may be pleasantly surprised at how well it works!

Lunchbox Cupboard
Here is a great way to organize lunches for the whole family! Label each of the six drawers: lunch bags/containers, fruit, chips/salty, drinks, desserts, and snacks/granola. Organize the items in the drawers by putting the oldest items toward the front. Everyone in the family can find exactly what they are looking for quickly, from Dad to the youngest child of the bunch! It also helps children learn to pack their lunch by food groups, teaching them the importance of each category.
This is a helpful tool for mom also, knowing when to replenish foods and to quickly tell what items have expired.

Grocery List Tips
How do I organize my grocery list? One way is to think of the different sections of your store and group the items on your list based on these sections. I make the right side of the page non-food items and the left side is all the food items. Shopping in the produce section will be last on my list, as I don't want my fruits and vegetables to be on the bottom of the basket!
I try to also organize each column on my list. Since I always go to the cosmetics/toiletries first, I will write everything for that area on the top right side of the list. All my other non-food items will be on the bottom of the right side. As I go around the house, I already have this method in my mind and write things on the list according to the process above.
How do I know what to buy? I organize my pantries/closets so that each item is always stored in the same place. When the item is missing or low, I know to put it on the list! For instance, the toilet paper is always on a certain shelf in my bathroom. This system guarantees that we never run out and can be a useful strategy for most items in our house.
The food section of my list is the most fun. There are the standard food items that I always keep in the pantry, but I like to try new recipes, too. I put the required items on the grocery list and then I am ready to go shopping.
Use these tips the next time you start your grocery list and I promise that shopping will be a breeze!

Summer Projects
Part II
If you read our last month's newsletter, I talked about one of my sons taking on a paid summer project of staining our backyard fence. I am happy to report that the job is completed and the fence looks like I paid a professional team to do the work. While the quality of work never suffered, my son learned a few very valuable lessons about hiring people to help.
- Just because someone is a friend, does not mean he is a hard worker.
- Coordinating dates, times, and checking the weather for an outdoor project are important for staying on track.
- My son noticed that the young men he hired who had part time jobs or worked with or for their parents, worked harder and were 100% more reliable.
After some trial and error, we told our son that we would work directly with him including payment for the finished project. This forced our son to manage his helpers and make decisions about when and how much to pay them for their work. He also learned that one gets paid when the job is done.
We have always made our kids work, and work hard at times. It was an honor for me as a parent to see the young man my son had become taking responsibility for this small but important project. A summer project turned into a lesson he will now take with him to the workforce and into his own home as he becomes a man.
