The "GO" Newsletter

January was an eventful month of media exposure for Get Organized! and we have more to be excited about in the months to come. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for up to the minute details on Get Organized!.

I had the honor of a repeat appearance on Good Day Fox with Steve Noviello in January. We talked about maximizing spaces in the home using various organizing tools from local stores. To my surprise, Steve, a closet organizing geek, showed off his well organized home closet.

Also in January, two of our organizers, Renee and Alyce, joined me at IKEA in Frisco for a full day of instore workshops. IKEA rolled out the red carpet for our team including a delicious lunch.

I am pleased to announce that Get Organized! has signed an agreement with The Great Big Texas Home Show where I will be sharing the stage with HGTV and DYI stars. See more information below about how you can get free tickets to this 3 day must see event coming to Cowboy Stadium.

As the month came to an end, my assistant Dana and I attended a gala at the Ritz-Carlton in Dallas. The Women's Business Council Southwest honored me with a nomination for the WBE Rising Star Award. As a certified woman owned business, this nomination came from other women business owners. Thank you for the nomination.

Enjoy!

Valentine's Dinner
Conversation

Get dressed up and go out

or stay at home and dine in. Either way we want to help you connect through conversation.

Below are some great questions to start off your evening:

  • what's the most beautiful place you've ever seen
  • if you could excel at any competitive sport, which one would you choose
  • where is your dream home located and describe what it would look like
  • who are your closest friends and what do you most enjoy about them

Come up with your own questions or get a little more personal with some. Just remember to keep the conversation off of worries, kids, or things that need to be done. It's one day a year that should be all about each other.

Check out our restaurant dinner ideas this month under our Savvy Ways to Save.

Don't Fall into Clutter

On December 15, 2010, Get Organized! announced the winner of its "Don't Fall into Clutter!" contest. It was Amy Moore with DFW Mommy Bag Marketing. Amy won an entire office makeover along with some additional home and business services.

The organizing work was preformed in January and we were able to redo her office area and had time for her kids playroom.

Watch for our next contest in October, 2011 focused
on the organizing needs of teachers.

IKEA in Frisco

Get Organized! and three of our organizers were at IKEA in January. Customers could attend workshops in three different areas of the store, with information about three areas of organizing.

Each organizer demonstrated the latest products IKEA had to offer, then showed professional organizing tricks that the pros use.

Customers were able to have all their questions answered concerning their personal spaces and IKEA products.

Thank you to IKEA for hosting Get Organized! and allowing us to share our knowledge with their customers.

Merging Two Households

Lots of couples tie the knot in February, and once that happens.... the merging of households begins. Each couple brings with them items from their own home and often the couples end up with many duplicate items.

Because of this, a lack of space becomes a major factor. Many couples opt to leave items in boxes stored in a spare room or garage. Often what was intended to be a short term solution, ends up becoming years.

When items are stored for long periods of time, they can become dusty, dirty, bug ridden and many times if stored outside the items start to yellow and become brittle.

Instead of long term storage, sell or donate items while you can get the best price. The tough part is deciding on what stuff goes and whose stuff stays.

First, identify duplicates. Place all duplicates on the "Duplicate Table". After everything has been gone through, each person can pick seven (7) essential items that they want to keep...no questions asked. Then it's time to go to negotiate.

Negotiating requires give and take. Be aware that if you don't want something of his coming into the home, you will probably lose something you want, too. Make sure the most important items are in your essential seven.

Finally, if you have the available space, always keep a "To Donate Box" somewhere in the garage or home. Place items in the box as you decide you want to purge them. It does not make sense to keep items that you do not want in space you need.

If you do not have a convenient space for a box, then tag items you want to purge with colored dots you can get at most stores. This will allow you to quickly identify items that you want to discard when you are ready.
