| "Organized Life" July 2009 |
I was thinking this month of how blessed I am to have had parents that taught me so much. Not only did they teach me that my faith as a Christian has everything to do with how I think and live, but they also taught me many practical and down to earth ways to manage my home from planting a garden and wise spending habits to not always taking the easy way out. This type of wisdom has instilled in me a desire to invest in my family the time and energy it takes to not just meet their physical needs but to build a godly home. I strive to build a home where my young men desire to walk in the ways of the Lord and that they will desire the many things that will build up their character and not tear it down. It all came back to me this month when my oldest son interviewed for his first job. The manager asked my son, "What do you enjoy doing with your free time?" My son replied, "I enjoy playing computer and spending time with my dad and family." As I heard this from my son, I was so thankful that I had invested the time and energy in raising a godly young man that desires his family and especially his dad. It's a process and style of parenting that didn't happen overnight but offers huge returns on the back end. By the way, my son is 17 and although he has friends, he didn't mention them when he answered the interview question. So in this month's issue of Organized Life, I wanted to spotlight one of our own and talk about how we as organizers come up with our practical advice that we hope you will instill in your own homes. It's not just about organizing but managing your family. Our ideas are traditional, frugal, character building, and help to make responsible kids and grandkids.

We're Moms
Many times clients ask our organizers, "How do you know what you know?" Why are our solutions so common to us but uncommon to many?
Most, if not all, our ideas come from our own lives. We share ideas that have come from working out our own organizing or home management dilemmas.
Yes, we are sometimes late and yes, we do sometimes misplace things. We're not perfect but those things are a rarity and not the norm.
My problem is my keys. Yes, I do have a few. I misplace them on the bathroom sink as I often rush in for an emergency bathroom break. Other times, while in a hurry, I sometimes leave them in my car, or worse, in the front door.
Even as much as I try, it still happens, but I approach the problem with trying to decide what tools could help me solve this problem. My answer was a purse with a good size front pocket that was a great place to drop my keys when not in use. They are easy to drop in the pocket and easy to grab and go. It works! While I occasionally do misplace them still, the frequency is less often.
So, when you say to yourself, "How come I didn't think of that?" or "How can I stop forgetting things that I need to do?", understand that our organizing team has learned these skills and solutions from our own experiences as both wives and moms.
Even if you're not an organized person, you, too, can come up with small solutions to fix your big problems. But for some of you, your solution may be to call a professional. :) |
Cortney is on our "GO Team" here at "Get Organized!". She obtained her degree in psychology from Texas A&M University- Commerce and uses those skills to help with the psychological process of organizing.
Cortney is the mother of two girls and is very involved in her church working in the Childrens Ministry and leading a marriage study.
"Not all our clients have kids but when they do, being a mom adds a perspective that you must have when organizing a family with kids from where you put the medication to choosing if you use labels with words or pictures."
Cortney is convinced that purging and simplifying will make your home so easy to maintain. It's all the stuff we have that causes us to have to clean more, move things more, and store more. Getting rid of things you really don't have a use for just feels good. | |
