Organizing Tips for your Business
If you own a small or home based business you're aware of the amount of time it takes at the end of each year to figure your taxes; especially if you have drawers and boxes full of receipts that have never been entered. Entered into what you might ask? Any software program that will keep track of expenses. This could be Quicken, Quick Books, or Microsoft Money..... you could even create an Excel spreadsheet. For many individuals with a home based business they make company purchases using cash, multiple different credit cards, and even using their personal checking account. Keeping up with all the different ways you purchase business expenses can be taxing. To stop having a pile of receipts to enter at year's end. Block out an hour each month on your calendar to enter receipts. This way you not only plan time but you schedule it into your daily TO DO's. Next consider having two separate spread sheets or two account names within your software program. One can be named "Business Checking " and would be your check register. Here you would enter your deposits, withdrawals, expenses, and anything that goes in or out of your business account. The next account or spread sheet would be named "Accounts Receivable/Payable 2009". Here is where you will keep track of all money that is received or spent, even if it's not spent through your business checking account. Whether you write a check or pay with cash any monies you use for business should be logged in this account.
