Stability Ball Versus Office Chair?

Finding the "correct" office chair has always been a challenge. The use of a stability ball has been a popular option for many. But just how does science view the comparison between this and a standard office chair?

A recent study, published in the scientific journal Human Factors, compared the postural effects and muscle activation of the trunk muscles during the performing of desk-type work while seated on a standard office chair vs. a stability ball. It also looked at the development of back pain during the same circumstances. The test population consisted of men and women with no ongoing back pain issues. The significant finding was that using the stability ball actually increased perceived back pain. While this study did not test those with pre-existing back pain, one should be wary of claims of any type of seating system, even those touted as being "ergonomically correct".

At the Pain Relief Center, I look at many different factors with those who are suffering from back pain, in terms of their seated position. Training to assist with deactivation of the hip flexors can play a huge role in seated back pain. Without addressing these factors, you may be wasting your money on expensive seating sytems, or using those that actually make you pain worse. Call or email me to see if your body is the cause, rather than your chair.

Is Your Ab Workout Hurting Your Back?

A recent story in The New York Times shed some light on how "core strengthening", and similar programs of exercise, may actually be harmful for your back. The story reports that one piece of research back in the mid-1990's created an entire industry for fitness in this country. Unfortunately this research was generalized in ways that were beyond the intention of the original research. While many teachers of core strengthening have expanded their focus, many have not. This could leave you at risk for increasing back pain, rather than reducing it from the core work.  To read the article, click here.

Back and core strengthening has been used successfully by many people. But strengthening should be only one part of a prevention and treatment regime' for back pain and back pain prevention. While many people are able to reduce or resolve their pain with exercise alone, attention to those tissues that are tight and impeding normal motion should be addressed as well. Myofascial Release is an effective means of restoring normal muscle and soft tissue length, often eliminating back pain by itself. After the tightness has been eliminated, strengthening can be safely begun. The cause of pain is seldom a strength issue; it is more often a tissue length issue.
