Welcome Back

Letter from the Headmaster

Dear Parents,

I love the beginning of a new school year, full of excitement and new possibilities. I welcome you to what promises to be an exciting year for all of us.

As I walked through the halls this week, I was energized by the enthusiasm of teachers, the excitement of our students, and the opportunities available to all of us at Lakehill.

This year our focus will be on building relationships. Our faculty members continue to build these strong relationships with their experience and innovative teaching.

We are joined by four new faculty and staff members and I look forward to introducing them to you. We have 79 new students, from around the city and around the globe, and we welcome them each to our school.

We are grateful for the generous gifts from the Parent Faculty Club (PFC). The gifts range from new and improved technology to a generous contribution to the endowment fund. Thank you to the many parents who give so generously of their time, energy, and financial resources. All gifts, regardless of size, impact the lives of our students.

I enjoyed seeing so many of you at the Back-to-School Picnic. What a wonderful turnout and a fantastic way to start the new school year. I hope you will join us on Friday, August 31 at the Warrior Athletic Complex for our first home football game of the season against Dallas Gateway.

I look forward to seeing you then!

Lakehill Receives Awards

For the fourth consecutive year, Lakehill Preparatory School has been selected for the Dallas Award in the Private Elementary and Secondary Schools category by the U.S. Commerce Association (USCA).

The USCA "Best of Local Business" Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USCA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.

Nationwide, only 1 in 250 (less than half of 1%) 2012 Award recipients qualified as Four-Time Award Winners.

Lakehill was also selected as a finalist by the Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce for the 2012 Hensarling Business Awards for the important role the school plays in the community. Finalists were honored by U.S. Congressman Jeb Hensarling on August 14 at a banquet in their honor. Earlier in the summer, Lakehill advanced to the final stages in the Dallas Business Journal's Best Places to Work awards program.

Picnic Back-to-School

PFC Hosts Annual Picnic

Lakehill families gathered on August 25 for the annual Back-to-School Picnic. Held on Saturday evening before the first day of school and sponsored by the PFC, the annual picnic is a favorite tradition among Lakehill families.

The picnic was a great opportunity for families to reunite for fun and friendship and to welcome new families to Lakehill. The Varsity Cheerleaders kicked off the event with cheers to build school spirit and the Varsity Football, Volleyball, and Cross Country teams were introduced. Water slides provided endless entertainment while those who were more musically inclined performed karaoke for the crowd.

A pot luck supper with snow cones provided by the PFC added to the festivities. "The picnic was the perfect way to start off a new school year," explained Ana Wolf, PFC Chairperson for the event.

The Upper School Zoology class didn't waste any time setting up aquariums and terrariums for this semester's class. Each student will build, monitor, and conduct research on his or her own tank. The class, led by Jeremy Holman and Melissa Carpenter, began an exciting study of animal diversity and ecology. Zoology students will visit the ESC three days a week.

The fourth grade began the second phase of their study of Flowering Plants. Students will develop observation and measuring skills used in science through this interesting unit of study.
