Lakehill Seniors Earn Scholastic Honors

Five Lakehill seniors were recently recognized for national honors, including four in the National Achievement Scholarship Program and one in the National Hispanic Recognition Program.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program, which recognizes outstanding performance by Black Americans on the PSAT, named Aleyna Mason as a Semifinalist. Aleyna scored in the top one percent of the more than 160,000 students who tested and will have the opportunity to advance in the competition for scholarships to be offered in the spring of 2011. Charles Burch, Manon LaGrange, and Kaitlyn Wilson were selected as Outstanding Participants, scoring in the top three percent.

Stephen Thompson was honored as a 2010-11 National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) Scholar. The NHRP was initiated in 1983 to identify outstanding high school students who are at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino and have achieved outstanding PSAT scores and grade point averages.

To date, 25% of the students in this year's senior class have been recognized as outstanding scholars by the College Board.

Spirit Week Offers Fun for All

It's homecoming week at Lakehill and it seems everyone has caught the Warrior spirit!

Every day this week has been a "Spirit Day" with great participation. On Monday, students and staff donned their cowboy hats and boots for Western Day while crazy socks and hats ruled the school on Tuesday. Wednesday found everyone decked out in neon, while Thursday brought out everyone's inner nerd. On Friday, students are encouraged to participate in Lakehill Spirit Day by wearing their Lakehill T-shirt or school colors.

Senior members of the football team tapped the Homecoming Court on Tuesday morning. The Homecoming Court consists of freshman Brianna Jacobson, escorted by freshmen Hudson Trent; sophomore Bailey Ort, escorted by sophomore Cris McCarty; and junior Ruth Godbey, escorted by senior Stephen Thompson.

Senior Nominees for Homecoming Queen are:
Cally Pope, escorted by junior Austin Simpson;
Kara Gamboa, escorted by senior Brett Trutna;
Sarah Baker, escorted by senior Charles Burch;
Kathleen Evans, escorted by senior Tyler Wentz; and

Katherine Crocker
, escorted by senior John Godbey.

A Homecoming Pep Rally will kick off the festivities on Friday morning at 8:50am in the gym. The Varsity Football game against TCA Waco begins at 7:30pm. The Homecoming Court will be presented and the Homecoming Queen will be crowned at halftime.

Homecoming also brings former students back to campus. An Alumni Dinner will be held at 6:30pm before the game on Friday adjacent to the football field. Robert Wolf, father of Lauren Wolf, class of 1996, will provide dinner from Rudy's Bar-B-Que.  Homecoming festivities also include the opening of the Alumni Celebration Garden and the opportunity for alumni to purchase personalized brick pavers that will be featured in the patio area.

As part of the annual Homecoming celebration, the Student Council is hosting a dance on Saturday night, October 23, from 7:30 - 11:00pm in the Great Hall at the Alice and Erle Nye Family Environmental Science Center. The "Over the Top" themed event is open to all Upper School students and their guests.

Lakehill Qualifies 11 for All-Region Choir, Sends Nine to StateAll Region Choir 2010

Lakehill recently submitted eleven entries in the Texas Private School Music Education Association (TPSMEA) All-State Choir audition process. Over 600 students from more than 90 of the top private schools throughout the state of Texas entered the competition by submitting a CD.

Although it is extremely rare for a school to advance all of their entries to the regional competition, all eleven of Lakehill's entries were selected for the All-Region Choir. The regional results for these outstanding choir members are:

John Godbey, Bass, 3rd chair

Ruth Godbey, Alto, 5th chair

Sydney Harding-Sloan, Alto, 13th chair

Brandon Kinard, Bass, 28th chair

Cally Pope, Soprano, 3rd chair

Austin Simpson, Bass, 14th chair

Chris Smaby, Bass, 4th chair

Arden Stringer, Alto, 3rd chair

Stephen Thompson, Tenor, 17th chair

Jackson Vickery, Bass, 19th chair

Tom Wood, Tenor, 26th chair

These talented Lakehill singers will participate in the Region clinic and concert on January 7-8, 2011.

Nine of the eleven will advance to the state judging on November 6. Those ranked in the top 25 will advance to the All-State round. Judges will select the top 40 from each voice part (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) to make up the All-State Choir.

Seniors Spruce Up

While the rest of Upper School was busy with the PSATs, seniors headed to Perry Campus for a day of work. Clearing trash, chopping limbs, and building a trail were just some of their accomplishments. After a long, hard day's work, the day ended with a tree dedication to the Class of 2011 for future students to enjoy.
