Early Morning Fire Damages Gym
Classes resumed on Monday at Lakehill after a two-alarm fire that occurred about 2:30 am on Sunday morning and damaged the school's gymnasium. No injuries were reported.
Structural engineers from two different firms are currently evaluating the damage. No official damage estimate has been released. At this point, it has not been determined whether the gym can be restored or will have to be rebuilt. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, officials believe the fire was electrical, probably caused by the motor of an exhaust fan used to keep condensation out from under the gym floor. Officials hope to have a final determination early next week.
"We are grateful that the fire occurred in the middle of the night when there was no possibility of injuries and that the fire was contained to the gym," said Headmaster Roger Perry. "Whether we are able to restore or have to rebuild, we plan to be up and running by the start of the 2009-10 school year. The silver lining is that this gives us the opportunity to enhance the gym with more seating and improve the aesthetics. We are extremely grateful to our Lakehill families and the community for their overwhelming show of support."

CLASSROOM CONNECTIONS

Friday Night Lights
Thespian members recently received a special visit from actor Brad Leland.
Leland, who has appeared in 20 feature films, 25 television shows, and numerous
theater performances, currently plays the character Buddy Garrity in the
television show Friday Night
Lights. Students were
given this opportunity through a connection with Thespian troupe director and drama teacher Elizabeth
Schmitt, whose husband Ed has known
Leland for nearly 20 years.
Leland was born in
Lubbock,
Texas, but moved
to Plano during his
sophomore year in high school. While in Plano, Leland played football for Plano
High School. In 1980, Leland graduated from Texas Tech with a bachelor's degree
in acting and directing. While visiting Lakehill, Leland was able to catch up with former hometown friend Tim Hagood. "It is cool to see someone you know on TV in an acclaimed series on a major
network," said Hagood.
Leland made his first stage appearance at age five, when he volunteered to go
onstage at Disneyland and sing the Davy Crockett song. He continued his acting in high school and college, performing in some 100 plays.
After graduating from college, Leland moved to Dallas where he worked in local
theater and found an agent. He got a part on the TV series Dallas and received his first film role at
age 28. He was recently seen in the film Hancock with Will Smith. His most visible
roles, though, are that of football booster John Aubrey in the film Friday Night Lights and the similar
character, Buddy Garrity, in the TV series of the same name.
Leland told
thespians that perseverance pays off. "Make sure you can put up with years of
rejection and not making money," he told students. "If you don't need to
perform; don't. In the end,
though, it is definitely worth it. It takes a long time, but just stick with
it."
He also shared his thoughts on high school with the group. "You have
an amazing opportunity here to be able to participate in everything," he
explained. "You can be the star of the tennis team, play basketball, sing in the
choir, and perform in the musical. The
kids I know at larger schools don't have that opportunity; they have to pick one
thing. Be grateful you have the chance to try so many different things here at
Lakehill."
