Cleaning up Oildale!
Alley graffiti Gowlings finish painting
Freels painting trash canOn January 30, Flood partnered with Church Without Walls to clean up Oildale with Give-a-Day, Get-a-Disney Day volunteers!  104 volunteers were out serving the community! Volunteers picked up trash, removed large items, abated graffiti, decorated non-cook food bags, made sandwiches, served food, and more. It was amazing to see everyone coming together, and local residents noticed!  We are so grateful to Jaime Gentry of Kern County Solid Waste for spending time on the project, Varner Bros, for providing the rolloff trash collectors and to all who helped.  Here are some of the numbers: 85 bags of litter, 12 dried out Christmas trees, 15 mattresses, 17 illegally dumped tires and many other items that should not be found in our neighborhoods including, sofas, shopping carts and needles.  Registration is temporararily closed for Flood opportunities in the Give-A-Day, Get-a-Day program.  As opportunites are posted we will alert through our facebook page.  Flood's Facebook page Since January 1, 141 volunteers have earned free days at Disneyland by volunteering with Flood.
San Joaquin gives Flu Shots at Flood!
On January 23, San Joaquin Community Hospital, equipped with its immunization mobile unit and many talented staff members, came to the Saturday Night Outreach to administer flu and H1N1 shots.  Guests really felt special to have the full team on site, and over 120 adults and children took advantage of the opportunity to be immunized.  Bryan Easter lead worship that evening and Living Grace volunteeers were on hand to touch lives in the name of Jesus as they served the meal, distributed groceries and much more.
Flu shots administered.
Volunteers serving fresh bread!
Volunteers from Living Grace help serve fresh bread.  The food pack on that evening included peanut butter, jelly packets, canned meat, fruit and other items.
Worship at Flood!
Kristin Matthews
If you ask many at Flood why they come, you will hear varying answers, but the music is often the reason.  We have been so blessed with great bands playing at Flood throughout the organization's history. In addition to our faithful worship bands from local churches, this month Bryan Easter, Kristin Matthews and Catalyst all made their way to Garden to lead worship for those in need. Music has become such a powerful tool in leading our guests to experience the love and comfort of Jesus.  Tonight,  February 6, Driven Cure will come to worship with us.  This is a great opportunity to just come worship at Flood (5pm, 23rd and P St.).

  Sharing Life with Mentoring

Mentoring Continues!

Mentor Orientation is February 25 at 6pm
Flood currently has 12 one-on-one mentor relationships happening and in every instance it is really making a difference in the life of the mentor and mentee.  Will you consider this magnificent opportunity to hear God's call to be a mentor? Flood volunteers and guests are paired up after both attending separate trainings and orientations.  Garden Pathways has a great proven program and we are so fortunate to get to utlize their curriculum and staff!  Logo
 Homlessness Prevention Grant begins!
Flood is assisting Bakersfield Homeless Center administer a grant aimed at preventing families and individuals affected by the current economic recession from becoming homeless.  The grant has strict eligibility requirements including being a resident of the City of Bakersfield and the ability to stabilize after participating in the program.   Greater Bakersfield Legal Assistance, and The Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault, are also assisting with the program.  The grant is part of the federal stimulus bill passed last February and it is exciting to watch the money finally trickle down to keep families from becoming homeless.   Flood has processed over 100 referrals and enrolled 15 households thus far.  If you have questions about the program and eligibilty please call the office at 32-FLOOD.

Business Corner

Flood's Board of Directors decided to purchase a used passenger van to assist with transportation needs for the Saturday Night Outreach and mid-week support services.  If you know where Flood can acquire such a vehicle please let us know!

Flood participates in the Kern County Homeless Collaborative which allows those providing services to homeless households to share programs, network and develop collaboration between agencies to further impact the lives of those affected by this problem.  Flood Director Kim Albers became vice-chair of the Collaborative this past month.  Kim also works with the 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness in Kern County lead by Mayor Hall.

Flood received the proceeds from our annual Christmas Tree Lot fundraiser this month.  The amount totalled just over $20,000!!  Thank you to all who participated in this massive effort.
