Building relationships, flooding Bakersfield with the love of Christ! |
ONE ON ONE RELATIONSHIPS Randy has breakfast with John every Tuesday morning, Louis and Jeff meet to talk on Wednesdays, Kim and Rosalina sit at Starbucks looking into God's word, Penny and Amber sit together in the front row at the Bridge Bible Church on Sunday mornings, Allen has dinner on Friday nights at Carl's Jr with Eddie and Robert as they share goals and life. It is a joy to share these examples of relationships already growing through the love of Jesus in our community. As we contemplate how to truly intervene and empower the individuals we meet at the Saturday Night Outreach no clearer answer comes than mentoring. With that in mind, Flood has partnered with Garden Pathways Family to Family Mentoring to offer Flood volunteers the opportunity to mentor a Flood guest. Mentor orientation is the first step in preparing volunteers to be effective mentors. Items covered include: how to build a partnership with families in need, encouragement of achievement of goals, the use of community resources, and how to understand the culture and worldview of families struggling in poverty. Mentor orientation is followed by three weekly classes of 1 1/2 hours each. After training, the mentor and mentee will be paired and commit to meeting for one hour per week. Please call the Flood office for more details on this exciting new step at 32-FLOOD. Orientation is at the Garden located at 900 22nd St. Dates and times are:
Friday, September 18 12:00pm-1:00pm Thursday, September 24 6:00pm-7:00pm
"As always we set out thinking that God would use us to bless someone or that we are there to be used by God; however, God has just as much for us to learn and be blessed by as those we are serving." - Allen Ray, Living Grace Community Church
Don't let this great opportunity pass by; Garden Pathways has been training mentors for years in our community.

Business Corner
Flood is updating pictures and posts regularly on Facebook. Become a fan today.Flood Facebook Page The Flood Board of Directors hired Lisa Shelley as Outreach Coordinator and Case Manager. Lisa is known by many for her assistance with the planning and execution of the Christian Housing Relief trailer project after Hurricane Katrina.
CHRP rehabbed and transported 53 trailers to Biloxi, Mississippi in the months following the hurricane. Recently, Lisa has been working at Kern County Mental Health in administrative support. We are very excited about Lisa coming on board. Lisa is a member of Calvary Bible Church and has two young sons, Ricky Ray and Grant.
Flood has been awarded $13,000 as part of the Kern Community Response Grant Program funded by the Weingart Foundation through the Kern Community Foundation.
San Joaquin Community Hospital gifted Flood a donation in the amount of $5,000 as part of their community partners program.
We are so grateful for these generous grants and donations. Financial contributions make it possible for the weekly outreach to continue and for Flood to intervene in the lives of those deeply hurting in our community. Over 50% of every dollar contributed at Flood goes directly to assist individuals in need.

Are you ready for some football?
Two Flood families have teens participating in local football this year.
Cole Hernandez is playing for Bakersfield High School and Jarred Dorton is playing
for North Fire Football. It is amazing to watch these boys triumph over the challenges they have had to face in life. We will be rooting from the sidelines as we continue to share life together. We have game schedules at the Flood office!

RiverLakes Community Church joins Flood team!

RiverLakes, like many other churches in our community, has always had a heart to be obedient to Christ. Several months ago our Senior Pastor, Dave Champness, taught us through numerous Biblical passages the importance of not only serving one another in our church body but also reaching outside our walls and comfort zones and loving those in our community that are in need. He challenged us to become more like Jesus, who in complete humility, served, never expecting anything in return.
RiverLakes is currently involved in outreach with Flood, Bakersfield Rescue Mission, Church Without Walls and New Life Church.
We are honored to serve at Flood. Steve Salyers summed it up when he said, "It has been such a blessing to be a small part of the miracle of Jesus touching the lives of people who come to Flood."
RiverLakes will be sharing the 3rd Saturday of each month.
