Greetings!

Humorist Evan Esar once defined statistics as "the science of producing unreliable facts from reliable figures." That's how it feels a little more than a year after writing the article "Beyond the Rhetoric: the Economic Impact of Charity in Door County" for the 2011 Philanthropy Issue of Door County Living magazine.

At the Door County Community Foundation we've long argued that Door County's charities are a major economic engine that brings tourists and seasonal residents here. After all, our arts organizations provide the cultural atmosphere people love and our environmental charities are the stewards and guardians of our natural treasures.

The Door County Living article summarized a study of economic data collected by the Community Foundation and showed in hard numbers how incredibly important charitable organizations are to the health of our local economy. No other community in Wisconsin relies more on the charitable sector to drive the economy than ours.

John Herlache Unanimously Elected Chairman of the Board

The Board of Directors of the Door County Community Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce that John Herlache has been elected as Chairman of the Board, replacing long-time Chairman Dick Egan.

Having grown up in Sturgeon Bay, as a young man John toiled as a self-described "cherry picker and farm lackey" when he wasn't working as a teller at the bank. "My father was President & CEO of Bank of Sturgeon Bay (now known as Baylake Bank) and my mother was a school teacher." John Herlache

"I met my wife, Nell, when she was working as a waitress as Johnny Veith's Cottage Restaurant. Her family lived in a cottage on Garrett Bay during the summers," says John. There wasn't a part of Door County that he didn't experience or enjoy while growing up. "Southern Door, Sturgeon Bay, Northern Door - all three of these areas made my love for the County universal."

After completing his residency in general surgery and finishing his military service, John longed to return to practice medicine in the community he knew as a child. "I wanted my kids to grow up where there was no class system, just people who all played together and worked together," says John. He and Nell chose to raise their family in Door County and have been tireless champions of the community ever since. "My fondness for the people of the County in general made me want to return to the County and be a part of making the quality of life better for the people who live here, both in medical care and in general."

In 1999, John joined with other community leaders to launch the Door County Community Foundation. He now assumes the role of Chairman, joined by Dave Eliot as the new Vice Chairman, and returning officers Polly Alberts as Corporate Secretary and Mike Felhofer as Treasurer.

"The Door County Community Foundation is a perfect fit for me," says John. "Its sole purpose is to improve the quality of life for those who live and play in Door County. What could be more perfect?"

Please join us in congratulating John Herlache on his election and expressing our deepest thanks and gratitude to Dick Egan for his many years of service as Chairman of the Board.  We are also pleased to report that Dick will continue to serve on the Board of Directors.

Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation.

It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves. The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.
