Greetings!

Those of us who work for non-profits like to think we're immune from the rash of corruption that seems to have overtaken the for-profit world. We see convicted felon Bernie Ebbers who perpetrated an $11 billion accounting fraud at WorldCom. There's Jeffrey Skilling and Kenneth Lay of Enron who were sentenced to decades in jail for their corruption. And Bernie Madoff sits in jail today for his $65 billion Ponzi scheme.

We charities like to think we could never be corrupted in quite the same way. Unfortunately, recent headlines show that simply is not the case. An employee of a senior citizen organization in Seattle was charged with theft of nearly $100,000. A clerk in New York was charged with stealing more than $1 million from his church. The charities of Northeast Wisconsin may be small, but we're not immune from this problem either.

There's the Green Bay mom who stole $5,000 from her local parent-teacher organization. And even in Door County, the business manager of a local childcare facility was recently convicted of stealing nearly $5,000.

It is hard to deny that the deadly sin of greed can corrupt any of us, even those who dedicate themselves to a life of service and charity.

Education Fund Application Deadline is May 22

The Education Fund application deadline is Tuesday, May 22.

The Community Foundation believes that education must go beyond traditional schooling and formal education. It should include informal modes of learning and extend beyond traditional settings. It must be integrated into the home and throughout the community - and education is not limited to children.

Learning is a lifelong pursuit - and we hope to nurture its incorporation into the many aspects of life in Door County. We welcome ideas from both recognized educational institutions and non-traditional organizations.

Applications must be received in the Community Foundation's offices by Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 4 p.m. More information and application materials are available online.  If you have questions or would like feedback on your idea prior to submitting an application, contact Christine Henkel.

Birch Creek Music Performance Center Endowment Funds

The Door County Community Community Foundation is honored to be able to administer the Endowment Funds of the Birch Creek Music Performance Center.

Birch Creek Music Performance Center, Inc., founded in 1976, is Door County's unique center for music education and performance. Birch Creek's mission is to provide intensive, performance-based instruction to promising young musicians by immersing them in a professional, mentoring environment.  Birch Creek Logo

Birch Creek is a school by day and a performance center by night. During the day, students are involved in rehearsals, classes, and seminars, and work very closely with faculty members. At night, students join with faculty in various large and small ensembles and perform concerts for the public. These concerts directly serve their mission by giving Birch Creek students diverse training of the highest quality as well as the real-life experience of performing before a live audience, and of performing with the frequency and the varied repertoire that is required of professional musicians. Since its inception in 1976, more than 5,000 students have studied and performed at Birch Creek.

Please consider incorporating gift to Birch Creek's Building for Tomorrow Fund, Lifetime Education Fund, Now and Forever Fund, and/or Scholarships Forever Fund in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity

Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation.

It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves. The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.
