Greetings! |

About five years ago Congress was considering a series of "reforms" of the tax code as it relates to the charitable sector. As a result, I found myself flying to Washington in an effort to discuss the implications of those proposed reforms with various members of Congress.
I came home telling my children about my meeting with this man who serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, that man who is in the Senate leadership, and so forth. Being the fish out of water that I was, I also played tourist and brought back refrigerator magnets for my kids so that I could show them where I had been. Even now on our fridge are magnets with pictures of all the presidents and of the Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington and Roosevelt Memorials.
One day not too long ago I arrived home to find my eight year-old daughter standing on a stool before our refrigerator closely inspecting all the presidential magnets. She was much too young to remember my trips to Washington, so it was as if she just discovered that the magnets were there.
I asked her, "Do you want to be president some day?"
She replied, "Daddy, of course not. There are no girl presidents."

I hope you're enjoying the explosion of colors on yet another beautiful fall day in Door County!

| Women's Fund Grants Reception on November 2nd |
The Women's Fund of Door County would like to invite you to attend the announcement of its third round of grants on Wednesday, November 2 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Crossroads at Big Creek.

The public is invited to this reception to celebrate with the board, donors and the recipients - but please first confirm your attendance by contacting Christine Henkel at the Community Foundation at (920) 746-1786.
The Women's Fund believes that when it funds programs that allow women and girls to reach their full potential, these women will be better equipped to support and strengthen their families and build healthy communities. Moving stories of how women and girls' lives have been impacted will be shared.
Although the Women's Fund was formed only two years ago, support for its mission has been generous, allowing program funding to proceed ahead of the cycle originally anticipated. Support for women at all stages of their lives is the focus of the Fund, which is administered through the Door County Community Foundation. To learn more, visit the Women's Fund online.

| Grantee Focus: Young Adult Parent Support Program |
Over the last few years the Community Foundation's Health & Human Need Fund has awarded grants to the Young Adult Parent Support ("YAPS") program of the Wellness Center of Door County.
YAPS engages new and expectant young parents in a variety of ways. Prior to birth, YAPS offers childbirth education focused on personal birth choices, labor and delivery, parent bonding, infant care and parenting skills. Through education, these young parents gain the confidence needed to go through the birth experience and are more prepared to be parents by learning basic parenting skills.
Once the children are born, YAPS offers events and activities to decrease the isolation often encountered as result of becoming a parent at young age. Participants in the program report that they appreciate the opportunity to bond with other parents and feel like they are part of a community. On a programmatic level, YAPS uses these social events to teach the young parents about child development and to connect them to other resources in Door County.
To learn more about the Young Adult Parent Support program, contact the Wellness Center of Door County.
Grants were awarded to support the YAPS program from the Community Foundation's Health & Human Needs Fund. To incorporate a gift to the Health & Human Needs Fund in your estate plans, or create a Fund to address the issues important to you, contact Bret Bicoy at (920) 746-1786.
