Greetings!

When the Door County Community Foundation named Lee Traven as our 2011 Philanthropist of the Year, it served to remind us that a legacy is about much more than what you leave behind.

Now in his eighth decade, Lee remains a driving force in the peninsula community. When he was presented the award at the Community Foundation's annual Celebration of Giving luncheon at Woodwalk Gallery a few weeks ago, he joined a remarkably generous group of previous honorees that include Ruth and Hartley Barker, Cynthia Stiehl, Dave and Vonnie Callsen, Marian Hislop, Tim and Sue Stone, Josephine Guenzel, and Miriam Erickson.

Lee Traven was born in Milwaukee and moved to Door County with his parents Fred and Olivia Traven when he was just five years old. He credits both his parents for instilling in him a commitment to giving back to the community.

His mother Olivia was an active member of the Baileys Harbor Women's Club and is one of the co-founders of The Ridges Sanctuary. His father Fred volunteered as a Boy Scout leader for 28 years and also served as president of The Ridges.

Today is another beautiful day in Door County!  I hope you have the opportunity go outdoors and enjoy it!

Door County Green Fund Accepting Grant Applications

The Door County Green Fund is now accepting grant applications from charities dedicated to preserving and enhancing Door County's abundant natural resources.
Green Fund Logo

From our lakeshore to the wetlands, our orchards to the meadows, the open spaces and our rural roads - there is something about the beauty of this place that keeps us here or calls us back each year.  The Green Fund provides a specialized avenue for people to contribute who are concerned about the protection of Door County's environment and, therefore, its economy.

The Green Fund welcomes grant applications from environmental organizations and units of government that are working to sustain and preserve our environment.  However, we also encourage non-environmental charities to bring forth ideas on how they might incorporate an environmentally conscious perspective into their work.

Applications are due on Tuesday, September 20th at 4 p.m.  For more information, email Christine Henkel or call (920) 746-1786.

The Green Fund raises money through the generous annual contributions from scores of individuals and businesses.  Each share a commitment to maintain Door County's environemental treasures so future generations of residents and visitors can enjoy the beauty that has been the foundation our community.  Consider becoming a member of the Green Fund with a financial gift today.
