Giving Matters

Greetings!

DCCF Logo New

Every 10 years the U.S. Census Bureau conducts its count of Americans and definitively tells us one thing we already know about Door County.  The population of our community is among the oldest around.

While in both Wisconsin and the U.S. as a whole, about 19 percent of citizens are age 60 or older, in Door County that number is 32 percent.

Many of the folks around here consider this an immense problem.  We've all heard about the "brain drain."

I don't mean to diminish the challenges Door County faces by having a population that is more senior than most.  But in all the discussions about Door County's future, I think we sometimes overlook the rising tide of wisdom and experience that characterizes our particular aging population.

(Read the rest of the story in the Peninsula Pulse).

Summer is in full-swing!  Be sure to take a moment and give thanks for how lucky we all are to be in Door County!

Celebration of Giving Honoring Lee Traven on July 13

The Door County Community Foundation will be honoring Lee Traven as the 2011 Philanthropist of the Year at a luncheon in Egg Harbor on Wednesday, July 13th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Lee Traven

Lee Traven's roots stretch deep into Door County's history.  His great-great-grandfather Moses Kilgore was Door County's first representative in the Wisconsin State Legislature.  Lee's mother Olivia was one of the co-founders of the Ridges Sanctuary and his father Fred was an active Boy Scout leader for nearly three decades.

Lee spend much of his professional life working in New York but he retired back to Door County - where he continued the family legacy and became an active citizen.  He's served on the boards of the Door County Memorial Hospital Foundation, Scandia Village, the Clearing, Wisconsin Public Radio, the Ridges, and the Lawrence/Downer Alumni Board.

There is no cost to attend the Celebration of Giving, but seats are extremely limited.  If you'd like to join us in honoring Lee Traven, please reserve a seat by emailing Christine Henkel or calling (920) 746-1786.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2011 Celebration of Giving luncheon on Wednesday, July 13th.
