Greetings!

DCCF LogoOn May 5, 2009, two of the wealthiest men on the planet convened a secret meeting over dinner in New York City. It's every conspiracy theorists dream come true.

Hosted by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, the attendance list was said to include George Soros, David Rockefeller, Michael Bloomberg, Ted Turner, Oprah Winfrey, Eli Broad and many others with lesser public profiles but equal amounts of wealth. What all the guests had in common, besides the vast fortunes they had accumulated and the incredible power they each wielded, is that each of them is also known as one of America's great philanthropists.

The challenge as they saw it was that if billionaires weren't willing to give back, how could they possibly ask anyone with far less means to do so. As a result, these wealthy people took it upon themselves to make a commitment to give away the vast majority of their fortune, and to make that generosity public. Their hope is that the rest of us may be inspired to be generous as well.

And thus began perhaps the most unprecedented commitment to philanthropy in the history of the world. It's known as The Giving Pledge.

Health & Human Needs Fund Deadline is March 22

The Community Foundation's Health & Human Need Fund welcomes proposals from charities that are working to aid those who live in the shadows of our society - those whose health or human service needs are not being adequately addressed.

Naturally, health and human service charities are invited to apply.  However, the Community HHN FundFoundation is also seeking ideas from arts, environmental and other types of charities that might want to explore using their talents in a health or human service context.

It's difficult to appreciate the incredible beauty and quality of life here in Door County if the very basic needs of your life are not being met.

Applications must be received in the Community Foundation's offices by Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 4 p.m.  Visit the Community Foundation's website for more details or to download the application materials.  Christine Henkel of the Community Foundation is available to answer questions and help guide you through the application process.

And if you'd like to learn how you can incorporate the Health and Human Needs Fund into your estate plans, or to create a Fund named for your family, call us at (920) 746-1786 or drop us an email.  We're here to help you give back to sustain the community we love!

Scholarship Application Deadline Approaching

Application deadlines for the 2011 scholarships are quickly approaching.  So be sure to remind local students to consider applying to the following scholarships (applicatoins are available on the Community Foundation's website):

The Bill & Yvonne Boettcher Golf Scholarship was created to provide educationalHHN Fund opportunities for promising young students from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.  The scholarship(s) will be awarded to a Sturgeon Bay High School senior with a demonstrated financial need for their first year of post-secondary education.  The applicant must have maintained at least a "B" average throughout high school and been involved in community service.  The applicant must also be in their second year of participation (or have participated previously for two years) in the golf program at Sturgeon Bay High School.

The Johnny G Scholarship was founded in 2002 in memory of Johnny L. Gonzales by his family and friends.  Johnny was a fixture of the northern Door County community and loved by many.  He was a graduate of Gibraltar High School and worked in the Door County restaurant business most of his (all too short) life. The Johnny G Scholarship(s) will be awarded to a Gibraltar High School senior (or graduate age 21 or younger at the time of application) with a demonstrated financial need.  The applicant's parents must be single, divorced from each other, separated, widowed or deceased.

The Robert J. Stoffel, Sr. Memorial Scholarship was created to help further the education of a promising young senior from Sevastopol High School in Door County, Wisconsin.  The ideal applicant will clearly demonstrate the characteristics of an emerging leader, will be involved in both school activities and community service, and will have a demonstrated financial need.

Each of the scholarships at the Community Foundation were created by the generosity of the people of our community.  Please consider making a provision in your estate plans to provide educational opportunities for young people in Door County.  Please contact the Community Foundation at (920) 746-1786 and we'll help you learn how.
