Greetings!

DCCF LogoA few months ago, Door County business and civic leaders launched the "Buy Local" initiative under the tag line, "spend it here, keep it here."  The idea is simple.  If each of us makes a conscious decision to spend just a few more of our dollars at local businesses, the economic benefit to Door County would be enormous.

Spending a larger percentage of our dollars on local goods and services is by far the most effective and cost efficient form of stimulus we could inject into our local economy.  It creates jobs and economic opportunity right in Door County.

But what's often lost in most "Buy Local" efforts is a recognition that the benefits of keeping our dollars in Door County aren't limited to for-profit companies.  We should "Give Local" too!

Just like there is usually a local vendor for most products and services you buy, there is probably a local charity which addresses the causes you care about the most.  Donating to local charities enriches our quality of life and alleviates the suffering of the less fortunate residents of Door County.

The best part is that we can accomplish these goals without the intrusion of a single government program or a penny's increase in our national debt!  We just need to redirect a few of the dollars we're already spending (and donating) outside the County right back here into our local businesses and charities.

And if there's snow where you are, remember to take the time to build a snowman this winter!Bret Bicoy

Health & Human Needs Fund Accepting Applications

It's difficult to appreciate the incredible beauty and quality of life here in Door County if the very basic needs of your life are not being met.

Health & Human NeedsThe Community Foundation's Health & Human Need Fund welcomes proposals from charities that are working to aid those who live in the shadows of our society - those whose health or human service needs are not being adequately addressed.

Naturally, health and human service charities are invited to apply.  However, the Community Foundation is also seeking ideas from arts, environmental and other types of charities that might want to explore using their talents in a health or human service context.

Applications must be received in the Community Foundation's offices by Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 4 p.m.  Visit the Community Foundation's website for more details or to download the application materials.  Christine Henkel of the Community Foundation is available to answer questions and help guide you through the application process.

And if you'd like to learn how you can incorporate the Health and Human Needs Fund into your estate plans, or to create a Fund named for your family, call us at (920) 746-1786 or drop us an email.  We're here to help you give back to sustain the community we love!

I'll Do Anything But Raise Money! - A Class for Reluctant Fundraisers

Bicoy SpeakingEveryone understands the importance of giving back to charity, but few of us enjoy the actual process of asking our friends to write a check.  A Board member's role in fund-raising doesn't have to be painful or difficult!

Drawing on his two decades of experience in philanthropy, Bret Bicoy of the Door County Community Foundation will explore different ways a Board member can be an effective advocate and fund-raiser for his or her favorite charity - and even have fun while doing it!  Whether you're a Board member who wants to learn more, or a staff member who is trying to motivate volunteers, this class can help you.

This half-day afternoon class is being offered twice through The Clearing Folk School at a Sturgeon Bay location on Tuesday, February 8th.

While the Community Foundation is donating Bret's time to teach the class, there is a facility and registration fee charged by The Clearing to defray their expenses.  To sign up for the class, use the registration forms provided by The Clearing.

2011 Scholarship Applications Now Available

As local seniors enter into their final semester of high school, thoughts of college and a bright future naturally come to mind.  The Door County Community Foundation is honored to be able to offer several scholarships to help these young minds realize their full potential.
Scholarships

Applications for the following scholarships are now available on the Community Foundation's website:

The Bill & Yvonne Boettcher Golf Scholarship was created to provide educational opportunities for promising young students from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.  The scholarship(s) will be awarded to a Sturgeon Bay High School senior with a demonstrated financial need for their first year of post-secondary education.  The applicant must have maintained at least a "B" average throughout high school and been involved in community service.  The applicant must also be in their second year of participation (or have participated previously for two years) in the golf program at Sturgeon Bay High School.

The Johnny G Scholarship was founded in 2002 in memory of Johnny L. Gonzales by his family and friends.  Johnny was a fixture of the northern Door County community and loved by many.  He was a graduate of Gibraltar High School and worked in the Door County restaurant business most of his (all too short) life. The Johnny G Scholarship(s) will be awarded to a Gibraltar High School senior (or graduate age 21 or younger at the time of application) with a demonstrated financial need.  The applicant's parents must be single, divorced from each other, separated, widowed or deceased.

The Robert J. Stoffel, Sr. Memorial Scholarship was created to help further the education of a promising young senior from Sevastopol High School in Door County, Wisconsin.  The ideal applicant will clearly demonstrate the characteristics of an emerging leader, will be involved in both school activities and community service, and will have a demonstrated financial need.

Each of the scholarships at the Community Foundation were created by the generosity of the people of our community.  Please consider making a provision in your estate plans to provide educational opportunities for young people in Door County.  Please contact the Community Foundation at (920) 746-1786 and we'll help you learn how.

Mini-Grants Available to Help Youth with Projects

The Door County Service Club Coalition invites local youth groups to apply for the Youth as Resources mini-grants.

Recently, aspiring journalists at Gibraltar High School received a YAR mini-grant to assist with the purchase of a digital Viking Voicecamera for the Viking Voice - the school/community newspaper.  This project is a wonderful example of young people using their talents to educate the larger community.

As a part of the grant review process, at least one participating student will be required to present their application and answer the questions of the review committee.  Upcoming application deadlines for the remainder of this school year are March 1 and May 2.  Grant decisions and funds will be available usually within 4 weeks of the application deadline.

Visit the
Community Foundation's website for more details or to download the application materials.  Christine Henkel of the Community Foundation is available to answer questions and help guide you through the application process.  Call (920) 746-1786 or send us an email.

The Youth as Resources mini-grants program is another of the Funds at the Door County Community Foundation.

If you'd like to learn how you can incorporate this Fund into your estate plans, or to create one of your own, call us at (920) 746-1786 or drop us an email.  We're here to help you give back to sustain the community we love!
