Greetings! |
For years folks have been proudly saying that Door County has more miles of shoreline than any other county in the United States. If you search through articles online you can track the shoreline's apparent growth. It was first listed it at 250 miles, 300 miles, and now, most of the recent articles claim "more than" 300 miles of shoreline. We all know that the confluence of our environmental beauty and cultural amenities are the major reasons why visitors come to spend time with us each year. So our shoreline is no small matter. It's an important part of both our identity as a community and a driver of our economy.
But why does appreciating what we have only become legitimate when we compare it to others? (Read the rest of the story in the Peninsula Pulse).
Enjoy the snow and have a safe and wonderful holiday season!

| Open a Donor Advised Fund Before the Tax Year Ends! |
The year is coming to an end - and your accountant is advising you that this would be a good year to earn a sizeable charitable deduction. But with the new year just around the corner and the holidays approaching, you don't have the time to deal with charitable giving. The solution? Open a Donor Advised Fund at the Door County Community Foundation! With a gift today you'll earn a tax deduction in this tax year, then you can take as much time as you need to determine which charities will ultimately benefit from your generosity! This is just one of the advantages of using a Donor Advised Fund to facilitate your giving. It's a simpler, cheaper, and more tax-efficient alternative to creating your own private foundation! Here's how it works: - Open your Donor Advised Fund at the Community Foundation with a gift of at least $1,000.
- You can give cash, appreciated stocks, real estate, or other assets.
- We set up a special Fund in your name, in the name of your family or business, or in honor of any person or organization you choose.
- Your gift to your Donor Advised Fund earns you a tax deduction in the year your gift is made.
- You can then support the causes and organizations you care about most with future distributions from your Donor Advised Fund.
- We handle all the administrative details and issue grants to charities in the name of your Donor Advised Fund (or if you prefer, grants can be made anonymously).
- If you choose, your gift can be placed into an endowment that is invested over time. Earnings from your Fund are used to make grants literally forever. Your gift - and all future earnings from your gift - can become a permanent source of community capital, forever giving back in your family's name. It's an incredible legacy for Door County!
Email the Community Foundation, call (920) 746-1786, or contact your own legal or tax professional to learn how the Door County Community Foundation can help facilitate your giving.

| You're Invited to a Women's Fund Grants Celebration on December 14th! |
The Women's Fund of Door County invites you to join us for a Celebration of our first grant awards on Tuesday, December 14th from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Crossroads at Big Creek in Sturgeon Bay.
This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone in the community to hear how the grant awardees will use these funds to help build, enrich and nurture the lives of women and girls in Door County.
Because of the friendship and financial support of many donors, the Women's Fund is able to make these grants.
Please join us! Holiday treats will be served courtesy of Door County Coffee and Tea Co. and the exemplary baking skills of some of the Board members of the Women's Fund.
Please RSVP by reply email or by calling (920) 746-1786.
Visit the Women's Fund online to learn more, or to make a gift to support women and girls in Door County this holiday season.

| I'll Do Anything But Raise Money! - A Class for Reluctant Fund-raisers |
Everyone understands the importance of giving back to charity, but few of us enjoy the actual process of asking our friends to write a check. A Board member's role in fund-raising doesn't have to be painful or difficult!
Drawing on his two decades of experience in philanthropy, Bret Bicoy of the Door County Community Foundation will explore different ways a Board member can be an effective advocate and fund-raiser for his or her favorite charity - and even have fun while doing it! Whether you're a Board member who wants to learn more, or a staff member who is trying to motivate volunteers, this class can help you.
This half-day afternoon class is being offered twice through The Clearing Folk School - once in Northern Door County on Monday, January 24th and a second time in Sturgeon Bay on Tuesday, February 8th.
While the Community Foundation is donating Bret's time to teach the class, there is a facility and registration fee charged by The Clearing to defray their expenses. To sign up for the class, use the registration forms provided by The Clearing.

| Children & Youth Fund Applications Now Available |
If the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams, then we can give no greater gift to a child than to nurture their ability to believe in their own potential and promise.
Grant applications are now being accepted by the Community Foundation's Children & Youth Fund. The Community Foundation welcomes applications from those charities who are working to ensure a brighter future for our community's children - whether it be alleviating their burdens today or helping them realize the opportunities of tomorrow. Applications must be received in the Community Foundation's offices by Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 4 p.m. Visit the Community Foundation's website for more details or to download the application materials. Christine Henkel of the Door County Community Foundation is available to answer questions and help guide you through the application process. And if you'd like to learn how you can incorporate the Children and Youth Fund into your estate plans, or to create a Fund named for your family, call us at (920) 746-1786 or drop us an email. We're here to help you give back to sustain the community we love! |
