Greetings! |
The Door Community Auditorium promises to "transport audiences all over the world. From the craggy hills of India, to the rough islands of Great Britain, and the iconic sound stages of Hollywood's Golden Age, the DCA will bring a truly unique cultural experience to the Door Peninsula."
My lovely wife reminded me of this when she was looking through our tickets to this year's performances - from Los Lobos to Gaelic Storm. From Three Redneck Tenors to the Letterman Christmas.
Perhaps one of the most wonderful things about Door County is that the Door Community Auditorium is not an exception. Ours is a County blessed with countless organizations that enrich our community with music, celebrate the arts, and sustain our natural beauty. These charities provide us with our unique quality of life and are the economic engine that bring visitors here - and keep them returning year after year.
At the Community Foundation, it's our role to introduce you to all aspects of the charitable world - from the arts to the environment, from education to human services.
We hope you'll join with us and give back in your own way to help sustain this community that we all love.

| Miriam Erickson Named 2010 Philanthropist of the Year |
Miriam Erickson was recently honored as the 2010 Philanthropist of the Year. She was presented the award by Dick Egan, Chairman of the Board of the Door County Community Foundation, at a luncheon on July 21 at Woodwalk Gallery. The following is an excerpt of the program:
If we liken Miriam Erickson's life to a river there seems to be two main currents that chart its direction, children and education. Coming to Door County just after her graduation from college, Miriam began her career here as a UW Home Economist Extension Agent. She soon met and married Howard Erickson and chose to stay in her adopted community. Howard and Miriam's family continued to grow as did their involvement in the community. Miriam feels that it has been a privilege to live and raise a family in this community. And we feel privileged to have a community partner who works so diligently to bring knowledge and inspiration into the lives of so many children.
Miriam's involvement with children and education has spanned both her professional life and her volunteer life. Whether at the local level as a extension home agent, teacher, ski coach, Gibraltar school board member, Library Foundation Board Member, Birch Creek Board Chairman... Miriam has made it her goal to provide young people with access to knowledge.
Miriam believes the answer to many of our problems can be found in education. We hope this award today recognizes Miriam's tireless efforts in that direction.
Miriam's love of mankind and her years of service to the general welfare are exhibited in her nearly 50 years of efforts, in addition to her great financial generosity.
Those of you who know Miriam realize that although she may not be loud and abrasive, she certainly knows how to make her point and get the right things done. As Ski Team advisor she had to fight to get equal rights for women skiers when it came to participation and recognition. She also has been fighting to obtain county wide access to educational programming via the internet for years - and she hasn't given up. In addition, as Chairman of the Board for Birch Creek, she worked hard to fund the magnificent addition to their campus.
We believe she is an outstanding example of Philanthropy within our community.
The Door County Community Foundation is honored to name Miriam Erickson as the 2010 Philanthropist of the Year. Visit the Community Foundation's website to read about previous Philanthropists of the Year and join with us in celebrating these remarkable people.

| Door County Green Fund Looks to Invest in Good Ideas |
Door County is blessed with an abundance of natural resources.
From our lakeshore to the wetlands, our orchards to the meadows, the open spaces and our rural roads - there is something about the beauty of this place that keeps us here or calls us back each year.
The Green Fund is looking to invest in efforts that provide environmental education, fund land preservation, eradicate invasive species, and support other types of "green" programs.
Grant applications are welcome from environmental organizations and units of government that are working to sustain and preserve our environment. We also encourage non-environmental charities to bring forth ideas on how they might incorporate an environmentally conscious perspective into their work.
Visit the Green Fund website for more information and to download the application materials. Applications must be received at the Community Foundation's offices by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, September 21st.
The Green Fund provides a specialized avenue for people to contribute who are concerned about the protection of Door County's environment - and its economy.
Contributions from any business, foundation, or individual are welcome and deeply appreciated.
If you'd like to learn how you can incorporate the Green Fund into your estate plans, please don't hesitate to call us at (920) 746-1786 or drop us an email. We're here to help you give back to sustain the community we love!

| Mini-Grants Available for Youth Groups and Classrooms |
The Door County Service Club Coalition has redesigned its Youth As Resources (YAR) Grants program and invites local youth groups to apply for mini-grants to support their work.
Whether it be the students of a single classroom, a scouting troop, a 4-H club, a school activity club, or just an informal group of kids who want to do something positive for Door County, the YAR Grants can help! Financial support is available for projects in which youth use their skills, talents and abilities to serve or educate others.
These mini-grants average about $200, with a maximum of $500 (although truly exceptional ideas may qualify for higher levels of funding).
As a part of the grant review process, at least one participating student will be required to present their application and answer the questions of the review committee. Application deadlines for the 2010-2011 school year are October 1, December 1, March 1, and May 2. Grant decisions and funds will be available usually within 4 weeks of the application deadline.
Visit the Community Foundation's website for more details or to download the application materials. Christine Henkel of the Door County Community Foundation is available to answer questions and help guide you through the application process. Call (920) 746-1786 or send us an email.
