Giving Matters
Door County
Community Foundation

Greetings!

DCCF LogoIn a few weeks the Community Foundation will host its annual Celebration of Giving.
This free luncheon is a true celebration of those great philanthropists who give so much of themselves to Door County.

This year's "Philanthropist of the Year" is Miriam Erickson.  Many of us know Miriam as a great champion of both the arts and education in our community.  When I think of Miriam, I think of someone who is the very epitome of the word "philanthropist."

Being a philanthropist begins with sharing of one's financial resources - whatever that amount may be.  Naturally, how can we inspire others to give if we are unwilling to make meaningful contributions ourselves.  But giving money merely qualifies one as a donor, not a philanthropist.

When a person has found a true passion for a cause (or our community as a whole) - and that passion manifests itself in volunteerism, leadership, and advocacy - that's when a philanthropist is born.  Somewhat ironically, those true philanthropists are often the last to recognize it in themselves.

Put simply, a philanthropist is one whose actions are more inspiring than the substantial dollars they already give.

And that, my friends, is why our Board of Directors has named Miriam Erickson this year's Philanthropist of the Year.

The Celebration if Giving luncheon is on Wednesday, July 21st.  Seating is limited, but if you know Miriam and would like to join us in celebrating her, drop me an email and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

Grantee Focus:  NWTC Helping People Start Over

For someone trying to return to the workforce, NWTC's Starting Over Project might just be the answer to their problems.

"Pat" is a single mom who raised three children and was out of the work force for several years.  When her fiancé of seven years passed away after a battle with cancer, Pat became what is known Nursing Assistantin government language as a "displaced homemaker."

A displaced homemaker is someone who needs employment but whose marketable skills have diminished because they chose to stay home and raise her children over the years.

Pat is exactly the kind of person who could benefit from training on the Sturgeon Bay campus of NWTC to help her employability.  The Community Foundation provided a grant out of our Education Fund to provide financial aid to students like Pat who are starting over.

With training and new skills which are highly coveted in Door County, Pat is now ready to re-enter the workforce as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Visit the NWTC website to learn more about the terrific programs available right here in Door County.  And if you'd like to learn more about how you can give back to educational programs through the Community Foundation's Education Fund, email the Community Foundation or call us at (920) 746-1786.

The Door County Community Foundation, Inc. is a collection of separate charitable funds set up by individuals, families, non-profit organizations, private foundations and businesses that are managed, invested and disbursed for the current and future good of Door County.
