Greetings! |
The warm weather has arrived early this year and even some of the Spring flowers are beginning to peek through. I grew up in Hawaii - a place without four clearly defined seasons. So I continue to be absolutely amazed that it only takes a few short weeks to go from a ground covered in white to a rebirth of all the colors that remained dormant below.
It's just another reminder of what a wonderful world this is and how lucky we are to live in this special place of Door County.
Make sure you take the time to look around you and enjoy another rejuvenating Spring!

| Grantee Focus: The Big Read Door County 2010 |
In 2004, the National Endowment for the Arts noted a critical decline in reading among American Adults. Subsequent studies found that reading comprehension skills were eroding and that these declines have serious civic, social, cultural and economic implications. The Big Read is a national effort aimed to address these issues directly by providing citizens with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within a community.
The Big Read Door County was the local effort of the Peninsula Players, in partnership with the Door County Library, designed to revitalize the role of literary reading in American popular culture. With broad support from across the community, and a grant from the Community Foundation's Arts Fund, the Big Read Door County gave our citizens the opportunity to read and explore the classic "My Antonia," by Willa Cather.
This past winter, Door County residents participated in discussion groups, relived the dancing pavilion of the book, attend performances by professional actors, and participated in staged readings of the this great American novel.
The Door County Community Foundation was honored to play a small role in this effort through a grant from our Arts Fund - one of our Community Impact Funds that provide financial support to activities in our community. Consider including a gift to one of the Community Foundation's Community Impact Funds in your estate plans. It's a wondeful way to give back to sustain the community we love. Balancing Act: The Responsibilities of Non-Profit Boards and Staff
An Except from the 2010 Philanthropic Issue of Door County Living which is on newstands now
"Almost inevitably, every community-minded leader in Door County will be asked at one time or another to serve on the board of directors of one of our local charities. It's volunteer work, so it sounds simple enough, but what does it actually mean to serve on the board of directors of a non-profit corporation?" "To find the answer, I spoke with the chief executives of 10 significant charities in Door County along with several of our community's most experienced board members. When combining their ideas along with my own perspective as President & CEO of the Door County Community Foundation, a series of themes emerged which offer a unique insight into the critically important role of a charity's board of directors."
