Giving Matters
Door County
Community Foundation

Greetings!

DCCF LogoWhen measured by total dollars raised, the Community Foundation is one of the largest charities in Door County.  In terms of a professional staff, however, it is tiny by comparison.

This small staff is possible because the Community Foundation outsources the vast majority of its investment and accounting functions to various investment managers and a professional
foundation services corporation - all of which operate on a contracted basis.  This results in a considerable savings to the Community Foundation and maximizes its ability to make grants to local charities.

But a small staff means we must fill open positions quickly.  Dave Swender, a one-time volunteer and current Administrative Assistant at the Community Foundation, is leaving us in March.  This position is critical to facilitating the work of the Community Foundation.  The Administrative Assistant is the central conduit through which we communicate our business transactions to the Community Foundation's accounting service.

If you know of someone with experience with MS Word and Excel, an exceptional attention to detail, a passion for Door County, and is looking for a permanent, year-round part-time position, please encourage them to apply.

Visit the Community Foundation's website to review the position guide and application instructions.  We're looking for someone to join us on our mission of inspiring people to give back to sustain the community we love!

A More Tax-Efficient Alternative to a Private Foundation

Have you or your accountant been thinking about establishing your own private foundation?  Are you hoping to use a private foundation to engage your children in charitable giving as a family?  For a simpler, cheaper, more tax-efficient alternative, consider establishing a Donor Advised Fund at the Door County Community Foundation.

Setting up a Donor Advised Fund can be done in an afternoon through a simple two-page agreement with the Community Foundation.  You then make a contribution to your Fund and receiveFamily Donor Advised Fund an immediate tax deduction for your generosity.  The Community Foundation then becomes your personal foundation staff - administering your Fund and making distributions to your favorite charities in your family's name.

Donor Advised Funds are also excellent vehicles for those families who wish to participate together in the tradition of philanthropy for generations to come.

That's what differentiates the Community Foundation from other philanthropic options.  We offer a high degree of personalized service for our donors.  The Community Foundation routinely works with families (and their attorneys, accountants and investment managers) to design a gift plan that fits your unique financial situation and addresses the issues you care about most.

And by giving through your own personal Donor Advised Fund, you maximize both the tax benefit of your contribution as well as its impact by tapping into the Community Foundation's in-depth knowledge of local issues.

If you have been thinking about establishing a private foundation, talk with your tax and/or estate planning professional about the advantages of creating a Donor Advised Fund at the Door County Community Foundation.  Or just contact the Community Foundation directly at (920) 746-1786.  You'll be glad you did!
Board of Directors Spotlight:  Mark Jinkins

Mark Jinkins is as accomplished an attorney as you'll find in Door County.  He's been on the board and/or an officer of the American Association of Attorney-Certified Public Accountants, the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Association of Certified Public Accountants, the Door County Bar Association, and the list goes on and on.  His credentials have Mark Jinkinseven earned him the privilege to practice before the United States Supreme Court - an honor earned by few attorneys in Wisconsin.  Mark could be a successful attorney anywhere, yet he continues to call Door County his home.

"I'm not from this area but my wife Ann is a native.  I was raised in far southwestern Wisconsin close to the borders of Iowa, Illinois and Minnesota.  After Ann and I met at the University of Wisconsin in Madison we obtained our degrees," says Mark.  Upon graduating from the University of Wisconsin Law School, they decided to raise a family in Door County.

"There is so much to love about Door County, but one facet that could be recognized in my opinion is the people here, whether their roots are elsewhere or here full time or part time, residents or visitors.  Artisans, musicians, chefs, and performers are far more talented than I could ever imagine."

"Ann has been a curator at the Door County Historical Museum since our children began school. Ann knows about local history, and especially local photographs," says Mark.  "With that knowledge, Ann, and curator Maggie Weir, wrote a book on Sturgeon Bay featuring historic photographs."

"I've traveled far but no place is like Door County. Door County will be special to me and my family forever."

As an attorney with Pinkert Law Firm, LLP, Mark's practice focuses on trust, estate, tax and elder law, along with business planning.  This puts Mark in a unique position to comment upon the importance of the Door County Community Foundation from both a personal and a professional perspective.

"Many [of my clients] have ties elsewhere," says Mark, but "without the generous thoughts and support could Door County be what it is to us if it did not have people with foresight to help."

"The Door County Community Foundation encourages giving back to what we love for preserving this special place into the future for those in the next century and beyond.  Without the Door County Community Foundation hope would be diminished."

Mark Jinkins has served on the Community Foundation's Board of Directors for nearly 10 years and is currently its Treasurer.  Please join us in thanking Mark for giving so generously of his time to Door County through his leadership at the Door County Community Foundation.
Health & Human Needs Fund Accepting Applications

Health and Human NeedsIt's difficult to appreciate the incredible beauty and quality of life here in Door County if the very basic needs of your life are not being met.
