Giving Matters

Community Foundation

Greetings!

DCCF LogoIn my nearly 20 years in philanthropy, I have had the opportunity to speak to small rooms with just handful of people to convention halls of more than a thousand.  But never in my life have I been more terrified than as a member of the cast of a staged reading of Willa Cather's My Antonia at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Ephraim earlier this week.

As one of the 2010 Big Read events, The Clearing offered a class "My Antonia on Stage" under the able direction of Alan Kopischke.  We spent spent a month studying Scott Schwartz' play adaptation of Willa Cather's most esteemed novel prior to this week's performance.

I have often been swept away in a big Peninsula Players production and experienced the sheer joy that is virtually everything at the American Folklore Theatre.  But it was this week's small flirtation with the stage that truly gave me an appreciation for the remarkable skill it takes to do this work.

You have to admire the incredible skill and dedication of the Isadoora Theatre Company volunteers and the many wonderful locally grown productions you can find at the Third Avenue Playhouse and the Door Community Auditorium.  We should all take the time to appreciate these community treasures - and maybe some of us will even work up the courage to play a role back-stage (or even on-stage)!

I also hope you'll indulge the papa in me for one moment as I brag about my eldest daughter Alyssa.  She was simply wonderful playing the part of Antonia in The Clearing's staged reading earlier this week.

And as for my career on the stage, let's just say that most folks would be real happy if I'd go back to talking about philanthropy.

Planned Giving Calculator Now Online

Working on a computerIf you're one of the 80% of Americans that make a charitable gift each year, it's almost a certainty that someone will eventually talk with you about making a planned gift as well.  Charitable remainder trusts, lead trusts, life estates - there's so much to consider, and it's difficult to explore on your own how these tools might be beneficial to your personal tax situation.  To help you answer these questions for yourself, the Community Foundation has launched an online planned giving calculator.

Visit the Community Foundation's website and use PhilanthroCalc - an online giving tool that allows you to experiment with different planned giving scenarios from the comfort and privacy of your own home.  Of course, you should always seek professional legal or tax counsel before finalizing such a gift - but PhilanthroCalc is an easy way to explore if a common planned giving vehicle might be right for you.

And if we at the Community Foundation can ever be of service, please don't hesitate to call us at (920) 746-1786 or drop us an email.  We're here to help you give back to sustain the community we love!

Naturally, health and human service charities are invited to apply.  However, the Community Foundation is also seeking ideas from arts, environmental and other types of charities that might want to explore using their talents in a health or human service context.

Applications must be received in the Community Foundation's offices by Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 4 p.m.  More information and application materials are available online.

Scholarships for Door County Residents

As many young adults finish their high school careers, thoughts of college and a bright future naturally come to find.  The Door County Community Foundation is honored to be able to offer several scholarships to help these young minds realize their full potential.

Applications for the following scholarships are available on the Community Foundation's website:

The Bill & Yvonne Boettcher Golf Scholarship was created to provide educational opportunities for promising young students from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.  The scholarship(s) will be awarded to a Sturgeon Bay High School senior with a demonstrated financial need for their first year of post-secondary education.  The applicant must have Collegemaintained at least a "B" average throughout high school and been involved in community service.  The applicant must also be in their second year of participation (or have participated previously for two years) in the golf program at Sturgeon Bay High School.

The Johnny G Scholarship was founded in 2002 in memory of Johnny L. Gonzales by his family and friends.  Johnny was a fixture of the northern Door County community and loved by many.  He was a graduate of Gibraltar High School and worked in the Door County restaurant business most of his (all too short) life. The Johnny G Scholarship(s) will be awarded to a Gibraltar High School senior (or graduate age 21 or younger at the time of application) with a demonstrated financial need.  The applicant's parents must be single, divorced from each other, separated, widowed or deceased.

The Robert J. Stoffel, Sr. Memorial Scholarship was created to help further the education of a promising young senior from Sevastopol High School in Door County, Wisconsin.  The ideal applicant will clearly demonstrate the characteristics of an emerging leader, will be involved in both school activities and community service, and will have a demonstrated financial need.

Each of the scholarships at the Community Foundation were created by the generosity of the people of our community.  Please consider making a provision in your estate plans to provide educational opportunities for young people in Door County.  Please contact the Community Foundation at (920) 746-1786 and we'll help you learn how.
Library Foundation's Endowment Providing for the Future

Often overlooked in the world of charity are the public treasures that are so enriching to our community.  One of the prime examples of this is the Door County Library.

"Door County Library plays a vital role in our community by supporting workforce development, life-long education and access to government resources through public access computer terminals andReading high speed connections," says Door County Library Director Rebecca Berger.

The Door County Library provides books, media and magazines for checkout at sites in Forestville, Sturgeon Bay, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Baileys Harbor, Ephraim, Sister Bay/Liberty Grove and Washington Island.  It's online InfoSoup catalog provides 24/7 access to materials in Door County libraries and in the 26 other public libraries.  You request the materials you need and they're are delivered to the Door County Library location closest to you.

"We provide public use computers at all eight of our branches.   We have many residents and visitors who need that access.  You cannot function in society without high speed computer connection.  We also provide a WiFi access point so that people can communicate or access information from their own laptop."

The Door County Community Foundation is honored to administer the Door County Library Foundation's endowment.

"The Door County Library Foundation endowment has enabled us to make changes in the technology and services we offer so that we are at the leading edge in providing what our community needs," says Berger.  "This will be an essential element as we face the future."
